Bexar County is Hiring a Mechanic I Near San Antonio, TX

Under direct supervision, is responsible for repairing or overhauling gasoline/diesel light/heavy trucks and road construction equipment including welding, electrical and light body work repairs; and performs related duties as required.
 
  • Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and two (2) years experience in automotive and light road construction equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of the different types of hand and power tools; knowledge of the operation and purpose of different lubricants; knowledge of diesel engines operations; knowledge of the operation of electronic testing equipment
  • Skill in the operation of hand and power tools, and welding equipment
  • Ability to drive different road equipment and diesel vehicles; ability to road test vehicles and diagnose malfunctions and vehicle operating systems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, auto part vendors and the general public
  • Must have a valid Texas Class A Commercial driver's license (CDL) with Tank and Air Brakes within six (6) months of hire or promotion
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
  • Required to be on call 24 hours a day
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Working conditions are primarily indoors with occasional outdoor exposure
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, hazardous material, flammable and toxic fumes (battery acids, cleaning solvents, gasoline, etc.) rough terrain, poisonous plants, dirt, dust, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
  • Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally moves objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Frequently moves about buildings and vehicles
  • Constantly positions self to perform essential functions
  • Constantly operates tools and equipment
