Nature of Work

This is head custodian work at an elementary school or middle school, or lead-work for a shift of several custodians for Bethel School District. Positions of this class exercise independent judgment in deciding whether to refer maintenance and repair problems to the District's maintenance department. At an elementary or middle school, work involves opening the building and classrooms in the morning, cleaning part of the building, performing minor repairs, and communicating work priorities to subordinate custodians working a swing or night shift. Positions of this class working as a lead-worker are responsible for directing, assigning tasks, and reviewing daily the work of a shift of several custodians at the high school on a swing or night shift.


Examples of Work

These duties are illustrative only. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Confers with the school principal and teachers on priority school cleaning and maintenance needs; periodically inspects the buildings and grounds for vandalism, needed repairs, safety hazards.
  • Performs minor electrical, plumbing, and mechanical maintenance work; replaces light bulbs, and fluorescent tubes; cleans clogged drains, urinals, and commodes; repairs student lockers; repairs wall molding and baseboards; ensures building thermostats are in proper working order, and works with the maintenance department in repairing and servicing facility maintenance and repair problems.
  • Plans and assigns cleaning runs to a crew of custodial workers; reviews work performed to ensure it is done according to instructions given; provides initial orientation to new custodians; assists crew with assigned tasks.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, dusts, and cleans part of the building, cleans sinks, urinals, commodes, and water fountains; washes walls, mirrors, and fixtures; collects and empties wastebaskets; replenishes towels, toilet paper, and soap; sets up tables in the cafeteria; cleans cafeteria after lunch and puts tables away; and ensures subordinate custodians have an adequate amount of janitorial supplies.
  • Leads a custodial crew and participates in a complete cleaning and routine maintenance of buildings during summer and school vacation periods.

Selection Factors

  • Knowledge of modern methods and practices of building cleaning and maintenance
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper use and operation of janitorial equipment, tools and chemical cleaning solutions such as a buffer, wet-dry vacuum, wax board, mop, and broom
  • Ability to work independently and delegate responsibility, and complete daily activities according to work schedule
  • Physical strength and agility to operate power custodial equipment safely and to lift and carry furniture and other equipment safely using proper lifting techniques
  • Ability to coordinate activities, assign work, train and lead subordinate custodians, as required by the position
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate and legal level of confidentiality regarding students, staff, and other individuals
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, students, administrators, parents, and co-workers
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable and prompt attendance

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. One year of previous experience performing the full range of custodial duties including the operation of hand and power equipment, and the safe and proper mixing and applying of cleaning chemicals; or substituting course work or training in janitorial, maintenance, and supervision for up to six months of the experience. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training that ensures the ability to perform the work may be substituted for the required experience.
