Job Title: Elementary School Band Teacher Classification: Classified Accountability: Reports to Building-Level Administrators Job Profile: The Elementary School Band Teacher plans, organizes and teaches band and general music to all elementary school students across the district. He/She/They instruct students, facilitate student learning, implement lesson plans according to established curriculum standards and requirements; serve as a resource concerning instrumental and general music instruction; instruct and train band students in musicianship and performance; oversee extracurricular band activities; monitor student progress, discipline as necessary, and perform other duties as required. Specific Band Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan, organize, instruct and teach band and general music
Ensure lessons are modified to accommodate individual student differences; provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
Recruit students to participate in band; establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band
Manage all processes related to the cleaning, maintenance and storage of band equipment
Maintain inventory of all band equipment
Partner with school staff, administrators, parents, community, and district-level fine arts specialists to create awareness of band activities and performances
Essential Instructional Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruct students as outlined in existing lesson plans
Establish positive, standards-based learning expectations for students
Maintain established routine of school and classroom procedures
Create a flexible class environment conducive to student learning and personal growth
Foster effective rapport with students; encourage self-discipline and responsibility; ensure fairness and exhibit an understanding and respect for students
Establish a safe, orderly environment and maintain reasonable rules of conduct in accordance with the District’s student discipline code in the classroom and on school grounds (including playgrounds, lunchrooms, hallways, etc.)
Track attendance per school protocol
May coordinate and attend class field trips; may work in extracurricular and after-school activities
Communicate effectively with parents when needed
Complete other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Professional Educator License issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)
Appropriate subject area content endorsement, if applicable
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the music and performing arts; must be willing to research and incorporate new philosophies, theories and practices pertinent to the field of music into already-existing themes and structures
Must understand the role music and performance play in achieving the mission of Berwyn North School District 98
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
Prior experience working with children/adolescents
Passion for working with children/adolescents
Strong desire and commitment to educating Berwyn’s youth
Subject matter knowledge consistent with state certification requirements
Understanding of effective teaching principles and familiarity with contemporary best practices and strategies with regard to classroom management and behavior management
Ability to modify instruction based on student needs
Ability and willingness to cooperate with faculty and administrators to meet identified short- and long-term targets and execute an overall education program
Understanding of the complex physical, intellectual, and social-emotional needs of students
Ability to read, write, and speak proficiently in English; ability to interpret lesson plans, procedures and textbooks; ability to present information effectively and respond appropriately to questions and concerns from students, administrators and parents
Willingness/Ability to assist with the management of student misbehavior
Ability to lift 10-20 lbs
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read, write, and speak proficiently in Spanish
Knowledge of peer mediation and conflict resolution techniques and the ability to apply these strategies in the classroom, lunchroom, or the playground
