Berks Counseling Center is a recovery-oriented behavioral health, physical health, and supportive services organization providing a holistic approach to a culturally and economically diverse population for the purpose of achieving a healthy and productive lifestyle.

As a Forensic Counselor, you will provide screenings, assessments, and out-patient services to inmates housed at the Berks County Jail System.

You will also…

• Provide individual and group counseling as appropriate to inmates. 
• Effectively complete all required clinical documentation related to outpatient treatment standards in an efficient and up-to-date manor. 
• Work collaboratively with BCC and BCJS staff
• Participate in individual and group supervision as required
• Assure each inmate has an appropriate aftercare, relapse prevention, and discharge plan.

Requirements

To qualify for the position, you will need…

• A bachelor’s degree in a related social service field
• At least one (1) year direct substance abuse counseling experience (or relevant internship) preferred. 
• Ability to work 40 hours per week within agency hours of operation, which are 8am-8pm Mon-Thurs, 8am-4pm Friday with Saturday hours, when applicable.

Preferred candidates will …

• Have a master’s degree
• Be PA Board Certified Addictions Counselor
• Be Bilingual: English/Spanish preferred.
• Have Knowledge of or experience with trauma-informed approaches preferred.

Physical Requirements 

• Must be able to see well enough to read reports, use the computer, and to type electronic documentation.
• Must be able to hear well enough to communicate verbally with clients in the forensic setting.
• Must have mobility to move about the prison with little to no assistance; some assistance devices are not permitted inside the secure area of the prison.
• Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds.
• Must have and be able to maintain access to work in the BCJS setting.
• Must be able to write, type, and use technology.

All offers of employment are contingent upon the following: 

• Receipt of results of a satisfactory drug and alcohol screening test. 
• Receipt of Tuberculosis test and results completed within the last year.
• Completion of Jail clearance process.
• Receipt of the originals of the following background checks: PA State Police Criminal History, PA State Child Abuse, and DPW FBI Criminal History. These clearances must be valid within the 60 months prior to employment. A conviction is not a bar to employment; however, a review will be conducted to make a determination of employment should a conviction be present.
• Receipt of original documentation and verification of relevant degrees, diplomas, certificates, or licensure.
• Confirmation that you are not on the OIG Federal Healthcare Program Exclusion from Participation list. Should you appear on this list, Berks Counseling Center is prohibited from employing you.
