SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

POSITION: School Psychologist (3)

LOCATION: Assigned Schools

DIVISION: Instructional Programs and Support Services

RESPONSIBILITY: To Provide School Psychology Services

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director of Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters Degree in school psychology. Must be fully certified and licensed by the WV Department of Education as a school psychologist or possess the ability to obtain certification. Experienced as a practicing school psychologist and/or internship. Demonstrated knowledge of school, federal, and state laws related to position of school psychologist. Ability to interpret and communicate information obtained from the assessment process. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work successfully with students, families, the community and school personnel. Ability to administer and interpret various tests required of the position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides Leadership and Support Services

a. Provides direct school psychology services

  • Administers and interprets individual testing
  • Recommends corrective procedures for students with special needs
  • Provides assistance to teachers and administrators regarding collection of data
  • Provides leadership in conducting Multi-disciplinary Assessment Team Meetings

b. Maintains caseload and observes timelines

  • Completes evaluation and submits written reports within specified timelines
  • Schedules evaluations, conferences, and meetings considering the organizational structure of the schools served
  • Uses time efficiently

c. Consults with staff and community agencies

  • Meets with supervisors and other administrators to assist in planning and program development
  • Provides inservice to teachers and administrators as requested
  • Refers medical problems to appropriate staff or agencies

2. Establishes and Implements an Improvement Plan

a. Develops an annual written plan for school psychology

  • Seeks input from staff in planning school psychology services
  • Submits schedules of activities to Director of Special Education
  • Assesses and evaluates the extent to which program goals were met during the year

b. Develops and/or modifies next year’s program to better meet student needs

  • Meets with staff to discuss plans for the coming year
  • Finalizes plans for services for the coming year
  • Meets with other special education staff to enhance the coordination of school psychology services for the coming year

3. Establishes Good Public and Employee Relations

a. Promotes good public relations

  • Establishes and maintains ongoing liaison with personnel in other educational settings and community programs
  • Serves as liaison with Central Office regarding Multi-disciplinary Assessment Team functions

b. Facilitates staff awareness and use of school psychology services

  • Establishes rapport with staff
  • Consults with teachers regarding student observation
  • Shares relevant information regarding students with staff
  • Consults with teachers and administrators regarding intervention strategies

c. Participates in system-wide planning

  • Assists in planning relative to anticipated program needs
  • Provides research or statistical assistance, when requested

4. Maintains Positive Professional Work Habits

a. Works cooperatively and professionally with the educational team

  • Adheres to county and state policies and procedures
  • Completes assignments and reports on schedule
  • Is punctual
  • Reacts favorably to constructive criticism
  • Shows courtesy and tact in inter-personal relations
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Performs other reasonable, job-related responsibilities assigned by the immediate supervisor

b. Demonstrates knowledge of duties

  • Utilizes appropriate evaluation techniques
  • Demonstrates factual knowledge of placement criteria, educational resources, pertinent legalities
  • Establishes appropriate priorities
  • Adjusts to new responsibilities and assignments with flexibility

5. Maintains and Upgrades Professional Skills

a. Promotes awareness of relevant trends and developments in school psychology

  • Keeps abreast of innovations and revisions in test instruments
  • Develops professional growth plan to improve competence
  • Participates in staff development activities for self-improvement
  • Participates in at least one of the following activities: reading professional journals, pursuing advanced degrees/university courses, conducting research, attending and/or participating in professional association conferences or workshops relevant to job responsibilities

6. Assist assigned schools and SAT committees with the RTI process in accordance with Special Education Law and Policies (2419)

7. Attend SAT meetings

8. Write, present, and interpret testing results

9. Other related duties as assigned by the director and deputy director
