Job Overview

The Director reports to the Dean, School of Health Studies (SHS) and is responsible for teaching, planning, managing, and assessing the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program; attaining and maintaining program accreditation; leading the processes for hiring and evaluating full-time and part-time graduate nursing program faculty; maintaining strong relationships with advisory boards and specialized accrediting bodies; and overseeing the activities that contribute to student access, retention, learning and success.

Professional Leadership: The Director will be the academic leader of the master’s Program in fulfilling the educational mission of the College. Reporting to the Dean of the SHS, the Director will have relevant experience in curriculum development, to ensure that the MSN program is academically rigorous and competitive. The Director will demonstrate program leadership and program building; advanced administrative, organizational, and communication skills, and a proven track record of successful innovation.

Administrative Collaboration: The MSN Director will be the primary administrator of the MSN program. Under the general direction of the Dean, the Director will provide administrative oversight over the MSN program, including compliance with college policies and procedures and the supervision, performance evaluation, and professional development of the program faculty.

Student Achievement: Directors work with their faculty in support of academic integrity at the College and the academic success of students.

The Director is responsible for monitoring the progression of students in the program and ensuring that students achieve program learning outcomes. The Director must be receptive to questions, complaints, grievances, and suggestions from the members of the department, both academic and staff personnel, and from students. Directors have the responsibility to take appropriate actions as required and in accordance with the policies and rules of the College.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership to and management of the MSN nursing program to include initiative in maintaining and improving the quality of instruction.
  • Lead the department in developing, planning, and implementing departmental objectives that align with the goals of the School Dean, Provost, President, and the Berkeley College strategic plan.
  • Devise and implement strategies to ensure a high-quality curricular program. This involves engaging in a periodic review of the program to ensure that it is current, market-relevant, and competitive.
  • Seek approvals for requested curricular changes and manage its review through Berkeley College’s Curriculum Committee. For new programs, or significant program alterations, work to obtain all relevant State and applicable accreditation agency approvals. Provide program data, reports, and schedules to the Dean of the SHS.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of the full-time faculty MSN nursing faculty and monitor the evaluation of adjunct faculty.
  • Assess clinical facility placement needs and evaluate the quality of clinical facilities of the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialization to ensure that clinical learning experiences can satisfy course and program objectives.
  • Establish and monitor academic standards for the MSN nursing program.
  • Work with the faculty to develop courses to help students pass required industry certifications.
  • Work closely with faculty on assessment efforts at the classroom, program, and departmental level, including systematic program evaluation (SEP) to ensure achievement of program outcomes (retention, graduation, credentialing exam pass rates, graduate and employer satisfaction, and program job placement rates).
  • Submit regular program assessment reports to the Dean of SHS or other members of the executive team.
  • Assist the Dean of the SHS in implementing and monitoring the graduate nursing program budget and identifying equipment and other resource needs.
  • Review the department website and catalog regularly for accuracy and currency. Recommend changes where appropriate.
  • Work closely with Admissions, and engage with prospective students, as well as promote their program/s broadly, to cultivate interest in the MSN program. Where appropriate, make recommendations on student acceptance into the MSN program.
  • Work with clinical preceptors to meet accreditation standards.
  • Conduct faculty meetings each semester to keep graduate faculty informed about department/program, the SHS, and college plans and activities.
  • Maintain program compliance with programmatic accreditation standards.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships within the community. Work with advisory board members to ensure that there is adequate industry input into program design and curriculum.
  • Teach assigned number of hours/courses each semester (6 semester credits), as appropriately established through discussion with the Dean.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Location

This is an onsite position based at the Woodland Park, NJ, campus. Position also will involve travel to clinical sites located in the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area.

Educational Requirements

The MSN Program Director position requires:

  • A doctoral degree in Nursing, either a PhD or a DNP.
  • Current licensure in good standing in New Jersey as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Current national Advanced Practice Nurse certification in good standing.
  • Current NJ Board of Nursing licensure in good standing as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Training and/or Experience

The following experience is necessary for this position:

  • 2 years successful graduate program teaching experience in a post-secondary setting.
  • Administrative experience in higher education (preferred).
