Bay Mills Community College is Hiring an Accountant Near Brimley, MI

Job Summary:

The Accountant is responsible for student billing accounting functions, analyzing and reconciling accounts, preparing journal entries to record financial data, preparing accurate and timely financial statements, and annual audit support. The Accountant will meet academic and professional qualifications, demonstrate dedication to academic excellence and student-centered education, and will support the mission and objectives of Bay Mills Community College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the accounting tasks associated with student billing. This includes review of student billing reports and preparation of monthly journal entries, reconciliation of the subsidiary student trial balance to student accounts receivable in the general ledger, creation of new billing transaction codes as needed, and implements changes that will improve efficiency or accuracy.
  • Monitors cash receipts activity, ensures that transactions are recorded appropriately, investigates any inaccuracies, and provides training to Cashiers.
  • Reviews payment requests for appropriateness, proper authorization, and compliance with College policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes and reconciles general ledger accounts.
  • Prepares, reviews, documents, and processes monthly journal entries.
  • Prepares accurate and timely financial statements and grant reports for assigned funds.
  • Performs a variety of tasks related to the processing, filing, and reconciliation of payroll tax liabilities and prepares information for year end tax reporting.
  • Reconciles the accounts receivable ledger, creates invoices, sends bill reminders, and generates reports detailing accounts receivable status.
  • Compiles information for the food service program, including the bi-weekly employee payroll deduction.
  • Serves as a backup for the processing of bi-weekly payroll.
  • Assists with the annual audit; prepares audit working papers and provides supporting documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possess a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in daily work and other projects; ability to meet communicated schedules and deadlines; exercise substantial independent judgment, and work with limited supervision.
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), governmental accounting standards, the Single Audit Act, and OMB Circulars and guidance pertaining to grant administration preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to interact effectively with external organizations as well as establish and maintain effective interdepartmental communications and relationships.
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and a commitment to: the tribal college mission and purpose; teaching and learning; high academic standards; and, student success.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, exercise substantial independent judgment, and work with limited supervision.
  • Knowledge and experience in computerized information systems used in accounting applications.
  • Commitment to customer service and ability to work closely with Student Billing, Financial Aid, and Student Services to perform job duties effectively.
  • Must have an excellent past work record.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to the tribal college mission and purpose teaching and learning, high academic standards, and student success.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum educational requirement is Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business related field. Will consider applicants who are willing to obtain Bachelor's Degree, but the employee would be classified as an Accounting Technician until degree is complete.
  • Ideal experience includes three years in a similar position in higher education, governmental, or non-profit accounting.
  • Excellent written communication and organization skills.
  • Knowledge or experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
  • Knowledge or experience in working with Native Americans, in an educational setting preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit with occasional walking and standing.
  • Occasionally the employee must bend, reach above shoulder level, kneel, and push/pull.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • The employee must use hands for repetitive action such as simple and/or firm grasping.
  • Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
