General EMT 1-2-3-Paramedic Job Description:

Job Summary:

The general EMT 1-2-3-Paramedic responds to calls that are prioritized and assigned by dispatch. The EMT 1-2-3-Paramedic coordinates, prioritizes, and fulfills scheduled transfers for the assigned in a professional, timely manner using good judgment while keeping safety, privacy and efficiency a top consideration. To provide this service and treatment with compassion and in a cost effective manner within scope of practice according to the Medical Operations Manual.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and follows the Medical Operations Manual (MOM), is familiar with its content, response requirements, quality assurance procedures, and other company policies.
  • Under the expertise of the Medical Director, will diagnose and treat medical emergencies in the pre-hospital environment and safely transport clients to the appropriate medical facility.
  • Safely and appropriately lift, carry, and transport clients utilizing appropriate equipment and techniques, always keeping patient safety and comfort as top priorities.
  • Must have a basic understanding of stress response methods to ensure personal well-being, understand body substance isolation, basic medical-legal principles, functions within the scope of care as defined by our state, regional and local regulatory agencies.
  • Perform a pre/ post-trip vehicle inspection ensuring that the vehicle is functioning and all the equipment needed to perform the scheduled transfers is present and working properly. Ensures equipment (stretcher, stair chair or wheelchair) and clients are properly secured before putting the equipment in motion, onboarding into or offloading from the vehicle, or putting the vehicle in motion.
  • Keep vehicles and equipment clean, organized, stocked and sanitized before each trip. Using proper PPE when sanitizing or cleaning spills. Fuel and check fluids of the vehicle and fill as needed.
  • Report any incidents, equipment issues, traffic incidents, accidents or other hazards to the Manager on Duty and dispatch.
  • Vehicles must be operated in accordance with State, Federal and company policies. Must abide by traffic laws governing the operation of emergency response vehicles.
  • Maintains a driving record in compliance with Federal (DOT) and company requirements.
  • Report immediately to the Manager on Duty any discrepancies in vehicle, equipment or supplies standards that could compromise the team’s ability to complete a transfer.
  • Notifies the Manager on Duty, Shop Manager and Fleet Mechanic of mechanical failures of the ambulance and equipment.
  • Complete all appropriate documentation as outlined in Company policy.
  • Report problems or incidents immediately to the Manager on Duty.
  • Attends all mandatory training and company events / training classes.
  • Maintains a positive, team oriented working relationships with team members, clients, facility staff and public safety personnel. 
  • Must accurately document the completion of the clients assessment and treatment provided
  • Must maintain accurate records of the type of services provided to the client, by documenting their statistical and billing information.
  • Utilizes and operates appropriate communications equipment, medical equipment, cleaning equipment, office equipment and tools.
  • Must maintain knowledge and always be familiar with specialized equipment used in order to provide excellent service.
  • Must always use appropriately and per manufacturing instructions all medical equipment such as gurney, airway equipment/airway bag, IV, splints, bandages, and medications in rendering medical treatment.
  • Read and be able to comprehend medication/prescription labels and directions for usage in a quick, accurate and expedient manner.
  • Must communicate effectively with empathy and compassion when interviewing patients, their family members, any bystanders, or other service agency members and facility staff.
  • Recognize any deviations or changes in the clients eyes or their skin coloration due to the client's condition and from the treatment provided.
  • Listens to and takes direction from dispatch and or Manager on Duty.
  • Converse and update the status of the client with dispatch, facility staff and other responders via phone or radio.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner in accordance with the company policies and our, “Standards of Conduct.”
  • Arrives for duty appropriately groomed and in uniform per company standard.
  •  Must maintain a clean, orderly environment in crew quarters.
  • Maintains punctual and regular attendance.
  • Communicate timely by cell phone, radio, text, and email regarding schedules, shift availability, service directions, and company information. Monitor radio, email box, and trip assignments throughout the shift.
  • Check the vehicle to ensure no personal belongings of the client are left after transfer.
  • Execute all terms and conditions as set forth in the company handbook and be able to be flexible with job duties or other duties as assigned.
  • Attends continuing education and refresher training programs as required by employers, medical control, licensing or certifying agencies.
  • Must maintain the level and type of certification(s) consistent with performing the duties of an EMT 1 or EMT 2. 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Patience, tact and compassion for assisting clients.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  •  Must be able to communicate in person, by phone in a courteous and professional manner with all clients, vendors, staff and team members. Acknowledge and greet clients within 30 seconds.
  • Must be able to learn, follow verbal / written directions.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment that can be stressful during busy times.
  • Good memory for details and procedures, good judgment and decision making skills.
  • Be able to learn and efficiently use company software and all equipment being used.
  •  Willingness to be flexible, work weekends and holidays. 

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Excellent driving record history with at least 5 years of US driving experience.
  • Must have a current EMT License.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and Medical Examiners Certificate aka Medical Card.
  • Must pass Drug and Alcohol tests and pass background checks. e.g. Federal Background check and Security Threat Assessment in order to obtain an airport badge.
  • Required to take a defensive driving course. The training must have included an Emergency Vehicle Operator Safety (EVOS) or equivalent and must be repeated every two years.
  • Must have a stable work history with a track record of being reliable and punctual.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Basic Life Support or Advanced Life Support Certification.
  • Fluency to read and write in the English language.

Physical Requirements:

  • Good eyesight, hearing, manual coordination and dexterity.
  • This position requires sitting, standing, bending, walking, stooping, crouching, kneeling, and climbing stairs for long periods of time.
  • Be able to push a stretcher, wheelchair or stair chair and position clients frequently. 
  • Use proper body mechanics while performing duties safely.
  • Able to bend, lift, push, drag, hoist and pull over 70 pounds or more is required. e.g. equipment and or assisting clients.
  • The work is physically demanding when assisting clients and must be able to successfully pass a Physical Agility Test.
  • Exposure to a variety of weather conditions. e.g. Ice, snow, cold, heat while performing duties.

Shift Description: 

EMT 1-2-3-Paramedic usually work shift’s that vary depending upon scheduled transfers and may include holidays and weekends. EMT Drivers will work a Kelly schedule, including three 24-hour shifts with 24-hours off in between, followed by four days off in a rotation.
