POSITION:

Teacher Assigned B- Public Schools Athletic League Access Sports Coordinator

Position is one year – renewal based on funding and performance.

Tenured teacher with minimum of three years of satisfactory teaching experience

POSITION SUMMARY:

The mission of the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) is to provide opportunities for educating students in physical fitness, character development, and socialization skills through an athletic program that fosters teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. In the course of a school year, over 50,000 student athletes compete in one or more of PSAL’s 46 sports. With an annual budget of over $26.0M, the PSAL has over 2,900 sports teams competing.

Under the supervision of the PSAL Senior Administrator, the PSAL Access Sports Coordinator will establish a structure for new and existing PSAL sports in line with current PSAL policies, including PSAL Access pathways. The PSAL Access Sports Coordinator will also managethe day-to-day operations of respective sports, effectively managing relationships with PSAL coaches, athletic directors, sport commissioners/supervisors, and student athletes. The PSAL Access Sports Coordinator will perform athletic program audits and also provide vision, guidance, and supervision for expanding and implementing PSAL Access pathways citywide. This includes working with athletic directors and school leadership teams to support existing systems and structures, which align to student interest, to increase student access to interscholastic sport opportunities.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Ability to successfully work in collaboration with supervisors, staff, and outside stakeholders, i.e. coaches, athletic directors, commissioners/supervisors, and school administrators.
  • Knowledge and understanding of PSAL compliance and eligibility rules and regulations
  • Satisfactory or overall effective or higher rating in current Department of Education position for the past five years
  • Demonstrated expertise in teacher training, coaching, and development
  • Experience establishing and managing program partnerships
  • Strong relationship management skills with students, staff, and a wide range of stakeholders
  • Excellent organization and administrative skills; Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven record of using data to inform decision-making
  • Proven record of producing and conducting multimedia presentations, and producing materials to engage diverse groups
  • Excellent record of attendance and punctuality
  • Willingness to work a flexible time schedule including nights and weekends

PREFERRED:

  • Experience working as a PSAL Athletic Director.
  • Knowledge of the NYC public school system.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with running sporting activities and coaching athletics.
  • Proficient in Internet communication and Microsoft applications.
  • Proficient in NYCPS data systems such as STARS and ATS.
  • Ability to prepare written reports and presentations clearly and concisely.
  • Capability in implementation of policies and procedures on a department-wide scale.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in building relationships with diverse constituencies.
  • Flexible, optimistic approach; committed to overcoming obstacles.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, and to collaborate with others. Effective public speaking skills.
  • Excellent record of attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the direction of the Senior Administrator, identify and implement new sports initiatives and trends that enhance the overall student experience and PSAL sports program
  • Works with school administration to ensure student participation across all school athletic programs.
  • Works closely with school Athletic Directors to administer interscholastic sports programs
  • Serves as a liaison between schools and the PSAL office to help resolve any issues that may occur within interscholastic sports programs.
  • Develops strategies for schools/athletic programs and athletic directors to implement quality sports programs that support student achievement.
  • Determines trends for new sports initiatives and the success rate for new and existing sports; evaluate school-based athletic programs and new team requests to provide feedback and recommendations to the Senior Administrator.
  • Establishes parameters for existing PSAL sports seasons and competitions (start to end dates, competition dates, post-season dates, championship dates); plans and executes regular season, post-season, and special event operations for multiple citywide sporting events year-round.
  • Strategically plans and provides support in the execution of trainings, professional sports-specific development clinics, advisory groups, and orientation workshops for athletic directors and coaches; assemble and lead various professional development sessions.
  • Ensures that all communication with internal and external stakeholders, including coaches, athletic directors, sports commissioners, supervisors, and principals, is clear, consistent, and reflective both the New York City Department of Education and PSAL.
  • Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with area college athletic directors, media representatives, and community-based organization and local businesses, as part of a comprehensive plan to grow PSAL’s community; create sports-specific highlight articles for various events to post on www.PSAL.org.
  • Trains and regularly communicates with sports commissioners and supervisors; ensures that all DOE/PSAL rules, guidelines, and procedures are followed by school-based staff and student-athletes.
  • Assists in the oversight of the PSAL interscholastic sports program within PSAL Access pathways.
  • Supports the athletic directors at each school within a Shared Access Program to facilitate communication and to establish systems that encourage meaningful participation.
  • Develops and manages standards, protocols, and systems to evaluate and ensure compliance with student athlete eligibility rules and regulations.
  • Identify and implement sports-specific partnerships to support the development of student athletes and training of coaches.
  • Develops and facilitates leadership and mentorship opportunities for coaches and students; develops, incorporates, and communicates regularly with coaches' and students' advisory committees to inform PSAL decision-making.
  • Creates and provides multimedia content to post on PSAL social media platforms.
  • Plans, arranges, and executes events to increase celebratory, networking, cultural, community service, and post-secondary opportunities for students.

WORK YEAR:

September 1 to August 31; 31 vacation days per year

HOURS:

37.5 hour work week: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday or equivalent

SALARY:

As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement
