Job Description

High School Assistant Principal

Job Summary

To serve as the assistant to the principal who is the chief curriculum leader and administrative

officer of the high school.

Reports To:  Building Principal

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Masters Degree in Education Administration.
  2. New Mexico License in Education Administration
  3. Eligible for a New Mexico Administrative License

Desired Qualifications

  1. 3 years of teaching experience
  2. Successful applicant will need to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
    • Staff relations, including, but not limited to, the development and use of skills necessary to make a positive use of Department Chair Team, to manage faculty and staff with courtesy and mutual respect, coach and motivate employees and to build consensus as a means of management;
    • School community leadership qualities, including, but not limited to, the ability to organize and leverage community initiative, communicate effectively, work effectively with local school improvement committees, manage change, resolve conflict and reflect the highest personal values;
    • Educational proficiencies, including, but not limited to, knowledge of curriculum, behavioral management, and instructional techniques, student learning styles, student assessment criteria, school personnel performance, evaluation skills and family issues; and
    • Administrative skills, including, but not limited to, organizational, fiscal, public policy and continuous improvement strategies and techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist in the instructional leadership to enhance school effectiveness by improving instruction and augmenting student performance.
  2. Provide purpose and direction for school.
  3. Demonstrate cognitive skills to gather, analyze and synthesize information to reach goals.
  4. Manage group behaviors to achieve consensus.
  5. Enhance quality of total school organization.
  6. Organize and delegate to accomplish goals.
  7. Communicate effectively.
  8. Assume responsibility for assisting in the general supervision of all school activities involving pupils, teachers, and other school personnel.
  9. Assist in establishing and maintaining an effective learning climate in the school.
  10. Assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
  11. Assist in the provision of a school-wide discipline program.
  12. Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline according to due process for the rights of students.
  13. Safeguard and maintain school records in areas such as discipline and grades.
  14. Supervise the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students and work with the Truancy Task Force on attendance and drop-out prevention programs.
  15. Perform additional reasonable job-related responsibilities assigned by the building principal.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position supervises the following positions 

Teachers and other staff as assigned by the building principal.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee must possess and maintain a current driver’s license and take a Defensive Driving course at the District expense if you drive a district owned vehicle. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. 

Certificates Licenses

  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a valid New Mexico driver’s license
  • Must posses a current New Mexico Administrators level 3B license

Terms of Employment

  • Appropriate placement on the AMSD Salary Schedule
  • Length of contract determined by AMSD calendar

Evaluation

Performance of duties will be evaluated at least annually in accordance with Aztec School Board Policy.

Physical Rating Level

This position will require the employee to function at a “Medium” physical capacity as defined by Worker’s Compensation Statutes. “Medium” physical capacity indicates the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 25 pounds frequently.
