Maintenance Assistant/Transportation – Job Description

Classification

Nonexempt

Reports To

Director of Maintenance or Administrator

Summary/Objective

In keeping with our organization’s goal of improving the lives of the residents we serve; the Maintenance Assistant/Transportation plays a critical role in maintaining all physical plant assets on the property, as well as providing transportation for residents to and from facility in accordance with current federal, state and local standards governing the facility. Under limited direction, the Maintenance Assistant/Transportation provides general service and repair work throughout the facility and provides service and transportation to residents to ensure the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

Essential Functions

  • Maintenance Assistant
  • Responsible for all service and repair tasks as assigned.
  • Assists with the scheduling of vendors and contractors for necessary building repairs and emergencies outside the scope of routine maintenance.
  • Assists in emergency situations related to the physical plant.
  • Ensure that regular equipment and systems maintenance schedules are monitored at all times.
  • Works with department heads to ensure routine maintenance in resident care areas does not interfere with the care or safety of residents.
  • Assure that established infection control and standard precaution practices are always maintained. Follow established safety precautions when preforming tasks and using equipment and supplies.
  • Reports all hazardous conditions, damaged equipment, and supply issues to the supervisor.
  • Maintains the comfort, privacy, and dignity of residents and interacts with them in a manner that displays warmth, respect and promotes a caring environment.
  • Must answer and respond to call lights promptly and courteously when working in Guest care areas.
  • May assist with training of new staff.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings and in-services as directed.
  • Transportation
  • Responsible for transporting wheelchair-bound residents as well as ambulatory residents that may need assistance in getting to and from their medical appointments and/or any other destination.
  • Transport patients to and from facility. Maintain complete and accurate log.
  • Operate vehicle in accordance with applicable traffic laws, Company Vehicle Policy, federal and state regulations.
  • Follow guidelines for vehicle maintenance, reporting vehicle malfunctions and traffic accidents, etc.
  • Immediately report any hazardous conditions, accidents and/or incidents with residents.
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicle – both interior and exterior.
  • Maintains proper forms in vehicles.
  • Understand, comply with and promote all rules regarding residents' rights; promote positive relationships with residents, visitors, and regulators, to include presenting a professional appearance and attitude.
  • Attend and participate in training, educational activities and staff meetings.
  • Must answer and respond to call lights promptly and courteously when working in resident care areas.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
  • Assist with snow removal when needed.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a health care setting. This role requires regular walking to various locations around the facility while pushing or pulling carts, or pushing residents in wheelchairs. This position works in resident care areas as well as outside weather conditions. This role may also come into contact with residents who may have contagious illnesses.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires mobility, reaching, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting, grasping, fingering, fine hand coordination, ability to read and write; ability to communicate with co-workers and doctor office personnel; ability to remain calm under stress. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing over 50 pounds and must be able to adequately lift, support and bodily manipulate the weight of a resident.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type & Expected Hours of Work

This position is part of a health care facility that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.

Travel

On occasions may need to travel to and from various locations in and around the surrounding community.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working in a building maintenance capacity.
  • Must have current Driver’s License with no driving violations on record.
  • Must have ability to understand and apply training, and in-service education
  • Must be capable of maintaining regular attendance
  • CPR certified or willing to get certified upon hire.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Must have ability to read, write and follow oral and written directions at a level necessary to accomplish the job
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality regarding patient and company proprietary information
  • Must be able to relate positively and favorably to residents, families and other employees at all levels
