Job Summary:
Provides direct spiritual care to patients and families to ease, resolve, or reconcile spiritual pain and distress precipitated by a life-threatening illness.
Job Duties:
Job knowledge:
  • Knowledge of client centered theology/spiritual orientation and the Theology of Death.
  • Knowledge of community spiritual resources.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with community clergy.
  • Knowledge of death, dying, and bereavement process.
  • Serves as a community resource in areas of dying and grief.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mental and emotional dysfunction.
Interaction with patients:
  • Listens and responds appropriately to patient needs in a timely manner.
  • Treats patients and families with compassion.
  • Adapts communication to meet patient needs.
  • Supports emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual needs.
  • Responds to difficult or emotional patient situations.
  • Supports patients’ and families’ sense of control.

  • Utilizes translation services when appropriate.
Age-specific care:
  • Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development.

  • Recognizes age -specific responses to treatment.
Patient education:
  • Involves patient and family.
  • Identifies and prioritizes learning needs.

Job Requirements:
Education and / or Experience:
M.Div. (Master of Divinity) or Master’s Degree in theology, pastoral ministry or pastoral counseling,. A minimum of 3-4 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of one full unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or to complete CPE training in the first 18 months of employment.
Computer Skills:
Knowledge of basic typing skills, data entry and word processing software. Database software and general knowledge of e-mail is preferred. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
