Job Title: Director of Nursing

Job Summary:
Essential functions to the position:
o Provides leadership and management of all nursing services
o Coordinates admissions, rehabilitation services and discharge planning
o Assumes responsibility for the facility in the absence of the Administrator

Extent of supervision:
A self-directed senior management position. Meets regularly with Administrator and other senior managers for exchange of information.

Position Specifications:
Education Requirement:
o Graduate of an accredited nursing program (associates degree or higher) Licensure

Requirement:
o Current State of Florida licensure: Registered Nurse (RN)
o Standards of practice set out by the entity issuing the license noted above will be adhered to at all times.

Additional skills/knowledge:
  • At least three years’ experience in administration of a skilled nursing program.
  • At least five years’ experience in gerontological clinical nursing
  • Evidence of continued education to maintain knowledge base current for long term care field.
  • Must have adequate knowledge of federal, state and local regulations affecting long term care facilities.
  • Knowledge/experience with third party payor programs as they relate to long term care (especially Medicare).
  • Superior leadership and organization skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in the predominant language of the facility.
  • Ability to affirmatively represent the facility to the medical community and the community-at-large.
  • Must promote Residents' Rights and provide leadership and insight to the staff to maintain the dignity of all Residents.
  • Must have appropriate knowledge of Policies and Procedures of the company (including Personnel Policies) and will follow and enforce these policies at all times.
  • Must have knowledge of, practice and enforce appropriate safety and injury prevention measures.
Status/Schedule:
  • Full Time
  • Salaried
  • Regular business hours of the facility and other times as required by responsibilities of the position.
Usual Location:
  • Throughout the facility, primarily in clinical areas.
  • Travel to seminars and conferences.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Required duties and tasks
o Effectively directs, planning, implementing and evaluation of nursing care services provided by the facility.
o Ensures that adequate staffing, of properly trained, licensed/certified and competent persons is maintained to appropriately serve the needs of the residents of the facility on a 24 hour/seven day per week basis.
o Develops and executes a means to properly evaluate the performance of all members of the nursing staff to ensure competence and adherence to the facility’s service guidelines.
o Ensures that adequate equipment, in compliance with all infection control guidelines and in good repair, is available at all times.
o Develops and executes a plan that ensures that all physicians' orders are followed as prescribed, and if not followed, ensures that proper protocol is followed.
o Develops and executes a plan that ensures that each residents' physician and family/responsible party is promptly notified of required physician visits and any other significant change in the residents' health status.
o Develops and executes a plan that ensures that each resident is properly assessed and that a Care Plan that is accurate, timely and interdisciplinary is produced.
o Develops and executes a plan to ensure adherence to the approved Care Plan by all applicable personnel.
o Must enforce the practice of applicable infection control techniques.
o Serves on committees as necessary
o Develops and executes a means to report incidents and accidents that occur in the facility, including proper follow up to avoid reoccurrence.
o Assists with the preparation and administration of the financial budget for the Nursing Department. Adheres to budgetary constraints.
o Supervises the selection and administration of nursing personnel.
o Administrates the preparation of reports as required by regulatory agencies and the facility.
o Coordinates admissions to the facility.
o Accepts as a condition of employment, responsibility to be at the facility or emergency shelter in the event of a natural or other emergency (especially hurricanes). Agrees to assume a leadership role should an emergency arise.
Required interaction with employees/other departments/outside parties:
  • Holds a highly visible position in the organization and community. Interacts with all levels of staff, referral sources and vendors. Upholds the highest ideals of the facility in all business dealings.
  • Keeps the Administrator advised of the needs of the Nursing Department.
  • Treats residents and visitors to the facility with courtesy and respect, makes serving these people a priority.
