Job Description

Sr. Engineer:  New Product Development will support concept to commercialization of a new enteral feeding electromechanical device(s) in the Digestive Health Business Unit. You will work with Marketing and cross functional team(s) to convert user needs into feasible solutions leading to commercialization of medical device(s). Along with participating in large projects as a SME on a sub-system, it is expected that this role will be able to also lead small NPD projects and technology development projects. Primary duties include assessing engineering requirements from user needs, component(s) selection, planning product design, developing test system(s), prototyping, verification and reliability test planning and execution. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide tactical platform level technical leadership for developing electro-mechanical medical devices.
• Drive product development and design control activities from concept to commercialization via Avanos’ stage-gate process.
• Leverage electro-mechanical expertise to develop specifications for selection of DC motors, gear housing, and sensors to meet system performance and reliability.
• Create testing platforms and methods to evaluate system performance, screen components, and develop control algorithm paradigms.
• Present and discuss technical concepts, tradeoffs, analyses, cost, and performance estimates and steer the product development team with data driven decisions.
• Apply a working knowledge of materials used in medical device applications.
• Conduct and timely document technical design reviews.
• Assist in designing for manufacturability, serviceability and developing assembly and tooling strategies for components.
• Guide integration of electrical, mechanical, and software subsystems for new products and features, and lead verification activities through proper test planning, execution, and reporting.
• Assist in compiling customer requirements and product specifications.
• Assist in creating a Hazard and Safety/DFMEA analysis.

Qualifications

Required:

• BS in Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Expert in Solidworks 3D modeling design for moving/rotating parts.
• Proficient in sensor/actuator GPIOs, integrating them into open bed systems and configuring them for system performance.
• Working knowledge of LabVIEW / automated test systems.

Preferred:

• Solidworks CSWE and/or CSWP certification.
• Expertise in LabView and Arduino open-source electronics prototyping platforms and statistical software like Minitab and SAS-JMP.
• Knowledge EMC/EMI compliance to meet IEC60601 standard(s).
• 3D surfacing, and sheet metal expertise.
• Six Sigma Green Belt certification.
• Certification in engineering analysis including tolerance analysis, GD&T, FEA.
• 7 years of product development experience as mechanical design engineer with 3 years in a lead role for electro-mechanical capital equipment. Class I and class II medical device experience is desired.
• Ability to work with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
