CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS : Under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager, performs skilled crafts and trades work in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline Fire Rescue vehicles and related equipment.

Determines and schedules major repair needs on all Fire Rescue vehicles and equipment.

Prepares and maintains records and reports on maintenance and repairs done.

Diagnoses and repairs motors, transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials including complete rebuilds.

Installs, diagnoses and repairs electronic equipment such as radios, intercom systems, sirens, strobe units and the like.

Diagnoses, repairs and / or rebuilds fire pumps, plumbing, and valves i.E. Ball valves, pressure relief valves and intake relief valves.

Diagnoses and repairs heavy-duty charging and starting systems.

Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems and components.

Diagnoses and repairs small engine equipment such as chain saws, generators, Hurst tools, cut-off saws and gas powered fans.

Performs emergency repairs to disabled vehicles on the road or at the station.

May assist in the fabrication of brush trucks and components.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS :

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience working on diesel and gasoline equipment, including two (2) years of experience in heavy equipment and fire pump mechanics.

Additional qualifying education and / or experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Must possess or obtain, prior to employment, a valid Florida Commercial Driver s license Class B .

In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or manmade disaster, the employee will be expected to work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES : (Note : The knowledge, skills and abilities identified in this class specification represent those needed to perform the duties of this class.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the diesel and gasoline mechanical trades.

Thorough knowledge of fire pumps and related valves.

Thorough knowledge of the principles involved in the operation of diesel and gasoline fueled engines.

Thorough knowledge of electrical systems including printed circuitry.

Thorough knowledge of the inner workings of drive train components.

Good knowledge of small engine equipment.

Good knowledge of shop equipment such as drill presses, grinder, band saws, etc.

Skill in the use of schematics to diagnose electrical circuits and install new equipment.

Ability to use repair manuals.

Ability to schedule equipment for repairs.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Moderate (to occasionally heavy) work is required. May have to work in confined space and in awkward positions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : Work involves exposure to noise, hazardous materials, machinery, heights, electricity, heavy smoke, the weather, diesel and gasoline, petroleum products, synthetic oils, chemical solvents and acids.
