Audubon Institute is Hiring a Commissary Keeper Near Orleans, LA

 

Position Title:Commissary Keeper

Department:Commissary

Reports To:Commissary Manager

Location:Audubon Zoo

General Summary: Responsible for the preparation and delivery of animal diets, sanitation of containers and premises, and inventory of products and essential items needed for the operation of the Commissary.

To deliver on the Audubon mission, the Commissary Keeper will: 

Provide a guest experience of outstanding quality.

•Maintain a pleasant and welcoming attitude when interacting with the public and during tours. Be willing and eager to provide information and answer questions as they occur.

•Maintain a clean Commissary facility.

•Deliver orders to animal sections daily and weekly, including: bones, fish, live prey items (e.g., crickets, worms, mice), hay, wood shavings, and other related food and non-food items.

•Take inventory in the absence of the Commissary Manager of produce, fish, meat, grain, hay and other products as needed.

•Order food and non-food items associated with Audubon Zoo’s animal collection.

•Maintain up-to-date diet cards for the purpose of preparing individual diets accurately.

•Receive and inspect produce, hay, grain, meat, fish, live prey items, (e.g., crickets, worms, mice) and other deliveries when Commissary Manager is not on site or available.

•Rotate food products to ensure quality.

•Report any diet changes as requested by Animal Staff to the Animal Health Care Center Veterinarian and the Commissary Manager for approval.

•Assist hospital staff as needed with animal procedures or treatments.

•Oversee and train Interns and Volunteers.

•Enthusiastically assist with Commissary tours.

Weave quality entertainment through the guest experience.

•Works with Education and other Audubon staff in the production, maintenance and operations of Behind-the-Scenes tours programs. 

Enhance the care and survival of wildlife through research and conservation. 

•Provides proper nutrition to the animals of the Audubon Zoo while following sanitary procedure

•Keep unpleasant concerns behind closed doors (vent backstage).

Supervision: Manages the Commissary Interns/Volunteers 

Experience:

•Food preparation experience preferred

•Basic understanding of sanitary procedures in a food preparation area

Education:

•High school diploma or equivalent

•Basic understanding of fractions, weights and measures

Licensure/Certification:

•Must maintain a valid La. Driver’s license

Software Requirements:

•Basic computer processing

Other Requirements:

•COVID vaccination series

Machinery/Tools/Equipment Requirements:

•Must have the ability to use mobile devices, computer, fax, scanner, phone, and copy machine

•Ability to drive Commissary cart to perform delivery duties

•Must have the ability to use commercial kitchen tools safely, such as knives, food processors, and stoves

•Forklift operation experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

•Ability to stand for extended periods of time

•Sitting or standing, bending, stooping, and per OSHA regulations: Heavy work involving lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds

•Constant adequate range of motion and mobility required

•Regular near acuity with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less required

•Typical ability to collect and analyze numerical and written data and verbal information to reach logical conclusions and ability to determine the time, place and sequence of operations or actions required

•Regular talking and the ability to express and exchange ideas by means of language expected

•Regular hearing and the ability to perceive the nature of sounds

•Constant ability to read, record, or type data quickly and accurately required

Environmental/Working Conditions:

•Working long hours between breaks or meals required

•Ability to work under and handle stress in an appropriate manner required

•May be exposed to high, medium, or low noise intensity

•Constant contact with co-workers required

•Affinity for animals preferred

•Exposure to fluctuations in temperatures required

•Exposure to outdoor conditions required

•Ability to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., mask, boots) where required

•Maintain off-exhibit areas in a clean, organized, and safe fashion

•Available to work weekends, holidays, and overtime when necessary

•Willing to perform Pest Control duties as necessary

•Willing to serve on the zoo’s Hurricane Team if necessary
