Purpose of Job

The purpose of this job is to plan, develop, supervise, and evaluate various Leisure Services Department programs. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to program planning, organizing, implementation and evaluation; supervising and training assigned employees; preparing long and short-term goals, instructing classes, ensuring safety in programs and facilities; creating and coordinating program publicity and promotion; and performing additional tasks as assigned.


Job Related Requirements

May be required to work on religious holidays.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Must work cooperatively with others.

When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.

Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Bachelor's degree in course of study related to occupational field with one year of related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the job.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

One year of supervisory experience preferred.

Must be certified in First Aid/CPR or have ability to attain within 6 months of employment.

When assigned to Bear Hollow Zoo

  • Demonstrated proficiency in presentation with animals including Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, and/or Raptors.is preferred.

Preferred qualifications: Lesson plan development. Animal care experience. Event planning

    Background in aquatics preferred.

When assigned to Therapeutic Recreation/Special Populations position

    Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential preferred

For Youth Athletics position

    Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA) preferred at the time of hire, but required within 6 months of hire.

When Assigned to the Morton Theatre (minimum qualifications)

    Course of study related to occupational field includes Theatre, Technical Theatre or related field.
    Must possess or obtain within 6 months of hire a valid Forklift license.
    Must possess or obtain within 12 months of hire a valid Rigging Certification such as ETCP.

When Assigned to the Park Planning Program (minimum qualifications)

    Course of study related to occupational field includes landscape architecture, community planning, civil engineering, urban planning or related field.
    Demonstrated proficiency in GIS is required; AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite and SketchUp is preferred.

When assigned to Tennis position

    Preferred qualifications: Background and experience in tennis, specifically tennis facility management, tennis programming and tournament administration. This is not a tennis teaching position.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Plans, develops, conducts and evaluates programs, events, activities, camps and/or tournaments.

Supervises, trains, makes hiring recommendations and evaluates assigned employees, volunteers, and interns; handles all related concerns, directs work assignments, disciplines and counsels workers when necessary.

Oversees program instructors and handles contract agreements with contract labor.

Prepares specific objectives for programs and special events, and develops a written plan of action; evaluates and adjusts programs as necessary; maintains records for division/department reporting and assessment.

Addresses needs of program participants with disabilities, and seeks higher-level assistance as needed.

Prepares annual budget proposal for programs, events and/or projects; may assist with the development of the budget proposal.

Coordinates volunteer needs, and assists with recruitment and training for programs and special events.

Creates and coordinates publicity and/or promotional materials for programs and special events, including website maintenance; assists with distribution of materials.

When Assigned to Bear Hollow Zoo

Plans, implements and evaluates educational and recreational programs and camps utilizing Bear Hollow Zoo animals.

Teaches environmental education/natural science topics to a variety of age groups, using various educational techniques.

Assists with general recreation programming at Memorial Park throughout the year.

Maintains and cares for animals at Bear Hollow Zoo.

Maintains and implements Standard Operating Procedures for animal handling and program use.

Assists Park Coordinator with Zoo operations.

Assists Park Coordinator in implementing animal training program for zoo animals.

When Assigned to Marketing

Responsible for designing, creating, and delivering comprehensive marketing programs and strategies to support the growth and expansion of recreation facilities, programs and services.

Collects and analyzes data related to social media marketing campaigns.

Assists with identifying the appropriate social media channels to expand department reach and tailors campaigns to the appropriate target audience.

Creates and evaluates department literature including collateral materials, photographs, advertisements and promotional materials, print advertising and signage.

Supports marketing campaigns and distribution of marketing materials for events.

Develops and provides on-going maintenance and monitoring of information for website and social media.

Works in conjunction with Community Relations Specialist on web content and evaluation.

Develops, updates, and implements a Marketing and Communications Plan for the department, including branding design and support.

When Assigned to Community Relations

Creates and evaluates department literature including news releases and all newsletters (employee, department, school, snapshot, ACTV, annual report, etc.)

Plan, coordinate, and conduct special ceremonies, dedications, and recognitions.

Identification of award opportunities and application fulfillment (GRPA, etc.)

Serves as the primary spokesperson for the department regarding dissemination of information and media inquiries, works to schedule and coordinate interviews supporting programs.

Works in conjunction with the Marketing Specialist on web content and evaluation.

Manages the department-wide volunteer program, including volunteer recruitment, training, recognition and retention.

Coordinates referral and placement of volunteers, and assists with volunteer staffing as needed.

Manages the criminal background screenings of volunteers who work with vulnerable populations.

Manages database of volunteer placement and activities records; gathers annual statistical data and prepares reports to measure the effectiveness of the program.

Develops and implements related staff and volunteer training procedures.

When Assigned to Athletics

Aquatics and Adult Sports Programs

Oversees Aquatics programs to include swim lessons, swim team facilitation and events held at pools and splash pads.

Manages Aquatics program part-time seasonal staff to include recruiting, interviewing, hiring, scheduling and evaluating staff at pools and splash pads.

Maintains Lifeguard Instructor and CPR/First Aid Instructor certifications. Must pass American Red Cross Lifeguard Management Course.

Plans, develops, schedules and supervises adult athletic programs, leagues and tournaments.

Plans, develops and manages ACCUG employee athletic leagues and programs.

Youth Sports

Plans, organizes and implements all internal youth sports programs and summer camps.

Oversees and enforces terms of agreements between ACCUG and leagues; educates leagues about youth sport standards. Annually reviews Outside Youth Sports Provider Agreement, and recommends changes as needed.

Plans and implements a program that trains and certifies volunteer coaches.

Recommends for hire and supervises assigned staff, volunteers, and contract labor that are necessary to operate all internal youth sports programs and summer camps.

Directs and administers field permitting process.

Stays current on information related to youth sports administration and communicates changes or new information to staff and outside youth sport providers.

Plans, organizes and implements a year-round field maintenance plan for all the baseball/softball fields.

Grooms, chalks, paints, and prepares athletic fields for programs, activities, rentals, and special events.

Assists with performing inspections and oversees the maintenance of assigned facility and equipment to ensure safe operations and maintained inventory.

Participates in the administration of the Youth Sports annual budget; submits budget recommendations; monitor expenditures.

When Assigned to the Tennis Center

Supervises Tennis Center employees. Interviews candidates and makes recommendations for hire.

Hires and oversees work of contracted service providers.

Develops, plans, organizes, schedules, administers and supervises the Leisure Services Department tennis program to include daily facility operations, lessons, classes, clinics, camps, leagues, special events and related activities.

Oversees pickleball program and serves as liaison with affiliated group(s). Develops and manages master schedule for tennis center and all assigned tennis and pickleball courts.

Develops and manages master schedule for tennis center and all assigned tennis and pickleball courts.

Teaches and leads activities as required needed.

Participates in the preparation and administration of the Tennis Center annual budget; submits budget recommendations; monitor expenditures.

Supervises instructors and coaches to ensure curriculum, content of classes and routines for competition teams reflect the mission and standards of USA Gymnastics and SafeSport.

When Assigned to Sandy Creek Nature Center

Teaches environmental education/natural science topics to a variety of age groups, using various educational techniques.

Trains volunteers, teachers, and other community members in environmental techniques, methods and philosophies.

Designs, constructs, and maintains environmental education displays and exhibits.

Collects and maintains native animals used in programs and exhibits.

When Assigned to Therapeutic Recreation/Special Populations

Plans and develops therapeutic programs and services for a variety of special needs populations.

Manages, plans, organizes, schedules, and supervises assistive aides for all programs, including but not limited to: lessons, classes, clinics, camps, leagues, special events and related activities.

Manages and maintains community partnerships for promotion, advocacy & offerings within the community for persons with varying ability levels.

Works in conjunction with programming division and facility staff to coordinate and conduct programs for special needs populations.

Works with staff from programming divisions to plan inclusive programs and to relay accommodation recommendations when appropriate for programming inclusiveness.

Serves as department representative on various special needs committees/organizations.

Serves as primary department contact for all programmatic and facility issues related to accessibility and accommodation.

Serves as department liaison for Georgia Special Olympics programming.

When Assigned to the Lyndon House Arts Center - Education

Plans and coordinates art education programs, activities and resources.

Develops educational curriculum for all ages.

Manages Children's Studio and the seven professional studios at the Arts Center.

Develops and participates in department-wide art education and arts activities.

Manages education budget and the purchase of materials.

Coordinates with Supervisor to develop art education grants.

Teaches art classes to all ages.

Works with artists to develop specialty workshops.

Works with CCSD in city-wide art education programs.

Manages part-time staff, volunteers and interns, and keeps apprised of work of contract laborers.

Recruits and trains new teachers.

Gives tours to school and other groups.

Assists in outreach to support the art education programming.

When Assigned to Lyndon House Arts Center Exhibitions

Plans, develops, and coordinates art exhibition programs, activities and resources.

Manages the registrar and receipt of artworks and exhibit materials; maintains exhibition guidelines.

Provides professional assistance to guest curators, art-related organizations, civic and community groups.

Oversees art competitions, researches and contacts guest judges; coordinates guest travel and scheduling.

Maintains and manages archives of programming and provides quarterly reports of current programming.

Schedules arts events in the gallery and establishes and enforces art handling and gallery use procedures.

Coordinates and manages gallery tours and outreach programs related to art exhibition.

When Assigned to Performing Arts

Plans, develops, supervises and conducts performing arts programs including classes and productions

Develops, directs, and evaluates outreach for performing arts programs.

When Assigned to the Morton Theatre

Oversees, trains, and schedules assigned staff, instructors, volunteers, and contract labor working at the Morton; handles concerns, directs work assignments, and counsels as necessary.

Coordinates front and back of house operations; holds house if needed; starts show when ready; oversees all performers, volunteers, Morton staff, and patrons; responsible for informing/enforcing house and ACCUG rules or calling ACCPD when needed.

Oversees use of facility and technical equipment to ensure proper handling and enforces safety rules as well as adherence to house rules. Approves and/or denies the use of event specific equipment or supplies including FX.

Oversees the development and implementation of daily operations of the theatrical equipment and technical systems (Video projection, Lighting, Sound, and Rigging); systematically checks and verifies that all systems related to the building are functioning properly.

Coordinates alcohol use within the Morton Theatre including: scheduling ACCPD security, confirming all licenses with caterer, and informing renting party of their full liability for the event.

Coordinates road/lane closures for school matinee shows between Downtown Parking, Traffic Engineering, surrounding businesses, and the Morton Theatre.

Serves as a contact point during facility work including; finding contractors, scheduling contractors, meeting contractors for site visits, opening/closing for contractors during work, and assisting with final inspection of project.

Provides insight and feedback on large capital projects scheduled for the facility.

Provides input in regards to regular and best uses of technical and facility equipment.

Maintains and designs house lighting plot.

Sets-up for and oversees all school matinee operations including load-ins, student crossings, and bus parking.

Operates various machinery, equipment and tools associated with general maintenance projects, i.e., forklift, etc.; performs general and preventive maintenance as needed, may operate lighting and sound systems for sponsored events.

Reviews rental contracts and recommends service needs of incoming presenters and advises them of Morton house regulations and other agreements.

Provides consultations, information, and budgeting needs with incoming presenters.

Assists with monitoring expenditures to remain within budget parameters.

Maintains accurate expense/purchasing card record and reports all expenditures in a timely manner to the Facility Supervisor.

Maintains and provides training on technical systems at the East Athens Educational Dance Center, Lyndon House Arts Center, Sandy Creek Nature Center and Athens Creative Theatre.

Installs, repairs, and replaces theatrical fixtures/hardware, lighting fixtures, etc.

When Assigned to East Athens Educational Dance Center (EAEDC)

Plans, develops, supervises and conducts dance single classes and accelerated programs to include various genres of dance.

Teaches classes in various genres of dance. Choreographs and works with instructors to create content for in person and virtual environments as needed.

Develops, directs, and evaluates outreach performing arts programs and content of classes.

Supervises instructors to ensure that the curriculum, content of classes, choreography for performances and demonstrations reflects the mission and standard of EAEDC.

Inventories, organizes, and tracks costumes for all performances and rentals.

Provides support for rehearsals and day of show outreach events and performances of the accelerated and single class dance students.

Manages the operations of the theatrical equipment and technical systems (Video projection, Lighting, Sound, and backdrop); systematically checks and verifies that all systems related to the Presentation Hall and studios are functioning properly. Serves as contact point for all related maintenance.

Contacts schools for matinee and school show performances including providing all marketing information for the Annual Production at the Morton Theatre and in house performances.

Assists with staffing of rentals and special events which may occur on weekends or holidays.

Prepares and submits program submissions for classes.

Assists with monitoring expenditures and prepares cost recovery reports.

Maintains accurate expense/purchasing card record and reports all expenditures in a timely manner to the Facility Supervisor.

When Assigned to Trails and Open Space, Riverside Parks & Paved Trails

Coordinates, plans with community members, bill, staff, and oversee special events for Trails and Open Space Parks and trails.

Serves as the division contact for all Special Events except for those within Sandy Creek Park. Oversee Paved trail operations including the Greenway and Firefly Trail networks.

Oversees North Oconee water trail amenities within Leisure Services parks.

Performs inspections and oversees the maintenance of assigned facility and equipment to ensure safe operations and maintained inventory.

Develops and Leads Recreational Programs and Events on primarily Paved trails and their adjoining park properties.

Works with facility staff and organizing groups to permit and implement special events in division parks and facilities.

Manages Division Special Event fee calculation and invoicing, collects and processes payments, and records applicable data and outcomes for future events.

Assists or fills in with other Program Specialist assigned to “Natural Trails and Volunteers” as needed.

When assigned to Natural Trails and Volunteers

Oversees Natural Surface Trails at all parks.

Performs natural surface trail maintenance and construction including weedeating, herbicide application, chainsawing, raking, and using handtools such as shovels, hoes, mcclouds, axes, saws, and loppers.

Performs inspections and oversee the maintenance of assigned facility and equipment to ensure safe operations and maintained inventory.

Develops & Leads Recreational programs on primarily Natural Surface Trails and their respective parks.

Oversees all volunteers programs and workdays for Trails and Open Space

Coordinates and leads volunteer work days using volunteer management software such as Givepulse.

Communicates frequently with potential and current volunteers using emails, phone calls, and social media outlets.

Assists or fills in with other Program Specialist assigned to “Trails and Open Space, Greenways, Riverside Parks Paved Trails, Events, and Rentals” as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of assigned division in the Leisure Services Department.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, copying machine, calculator, scanner, and equipment associated with performances including technical systems . This position requires: walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Dance center position also requires the ability to demonstrate dance moves which may include jumping, turning quickly, and balancing, Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of medium work.
When assigned to the Morton Theatre
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment associated with theatrical equipment, technical systems, and general maintenance projects. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of heavy work.

When assigned to Trails and Open Space

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a vehicle, utility vehicle, bicycle, game cameras, long handle tools, gas/battery powered tools, machinery, radio/communications equipment, cameras, calculators, copy machines, telephones, iPad, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: riding a bicycle for 6 miles per day frequently and 30 miles per day occasionally, hiking for 6 miles per day frequently and 12 miles per day occasionally without support, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. Must be able to lift and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of heavy work.
