CITY OF ASHLAND PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT POSITION DESCRIPTION GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Park & Recreation Director, this position is responsible for working with Ashland Parks and Recreation Staff to plan, organize, promote, and implement of a variety of adult and youth summer recreation programs, activities, and special events for the Parks and Recreation Department. Responsibilities include creation and implementation of recreation programs including summer day camps, marketing of programs/special events, and assistance with general office procedures. Work will be performed in accordance with established goals and objectives and is reviewed through the observation of results.

Knowledge and Experience:

Develop, organize, implement, supervise and evaluate summer day camp and other recreational programs Assist the Parks and Recreation Director, Recreation Coordinator and Administrative Assistant with planning and be present at assigned special events Ability to make contacts throughout the community and other resources for assistance with programs. Ability to work independently; to prioritize tasks and organize work efficiently. Research ideas for programs. Create new programming, establish program guidelines (expenses, hours, fees, workers, etc.), finalize lesson plans, select equipment purchases, acquire necessary instructors if not self, coordinate and implement the program. Assists in coordinating and conducting program registrations, collects and deposits program fees. Assists in tracking and documenting the use of the City of Ashland facilities, parks and campground. Maintaining a level of confidentiality and discretion. Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally, in writing and on the computer. Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with staff and the public. Ability to operate various office machines, including but not limited to, copier, telephone, fax machine, and PC with Microsoft Office. Performs other duties as requested or assigned.

The Role of a Farmer's Market Manager involves establishing a welcoming, clean, and secure market environment, supervising all market activities, handling the market's cash box and generating reports, visiting each vendor's site on market day, setting up street barricades and market signs, keeping a daily log, communicating effectively with vendors, and maintaining a schedule of available sites for the season to foster a thriving and profitable market for vendors and customers.

OPERATIONAL DUTIES OF THE MARKET MANAGER

  • Set up street barricades before market begins; check throughout the market day to make sure barricades are still in place
  • To prevent accidents, no vehicle may be moved in the market area after 7:40 am; Vendors arriving late will be required to walk their products to the stall site
  • Set up market signs before 8:00 am (these are stored behind the Daily Bread with the market manager’s tent and the other market equipment)
  • Set up the manager’s tent and table and display market promotional items and any handouts, posters, information packets, etc.
  • At exactly 8:00 open the market by announcing market opens and ringing the market bell
  • Ensure the market area remains clean, safe, and inviting
  • Monitor all activities within the market; communicate and enforce all farmers market rules and regulations
  • Visit each vendor site at least once every market day and keep vendors aware of market policies, activities, and promotions
  • Remain available within the market area to greet vendors, collect fees, assign new vendor sites, and to assist with proper set up
  • Have application packets available for new vendors at the market
  • Maintain a market cash box with the ability to make change for all transactions; write receipts for all transactions
  • Keep a daily log that includes the weather, an estimate of customer attendance, record of vendors, descriptions of problems and their solutions, events on that day, and any other observations and notes
  • At 11:45 remind vendors, especially new vendors, that the market closes at 12:00 pm
  • After closing, take down the manager’s tent and table and collect any loose items or signage in the market area
  • Take down road barricades at 12:30; all vendor sites must be down and out of the right of way by 12:30
  • Finalize all money and EBT transactions, account for these transactions, and prepare end-of day report for the treasurer
  • Continue communication throughout the season with the vendors concerning attendance of markets; call absentee vendors and maintain a calendar of open sites for season

SECTION B ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Prepare and submit Wisconsin Department of Revenue Temporary Event Report S-240 on a monthly basis, which includes collecting vendor contact information and Seller’s Permit number
  • Manage the Ashland Area Farmer’s Market’s application to become an authorized SNAP retailer; serve as the “Responsible Official” for the SNAP Program
  • Maintain the Ashland Area Farmer’s Market status as an Authorized SNAP Retailer
  • Maintain the Ashland Area Farmer’s Market Facebook and Instagram pages
  • Maintain the Ashland Area Farmer’s Market website
  • Recruit and hire live music performers for market day

SECTION C MARKET DECISIONS

Should an issue arise where market rules and regulations are unclear, the market manager is encouraged to be inclusive as long as the activity is:

  • Legal.
  • Follows health and safety regulations.
  • Family Friendly.
  • And supports the market mission statement. The market manager will inform the vendors of the appeals process if denied. The board has a grievance procedure, which can be found in the Rules and Regulations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED is required. College education or course work Agriculture or food industry knowledge and experience and or event management experience is desired. Possession or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid driver’s license. CPR/First Aid/AED training - Desired

WORK SCHEDULE, COMPENSATION, AND BENEFITS

This is a seasonal position limited to 1800 hours. Typical work week will be 12-20 hrs/wk. The current wage rate for this position is $15.00 -$19.00 per hour depending on knowledge, skills, and experience

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED is required. College education, course work, or prior experience in Agriculture, the Food Industry, or Event Management is desired. Possession, or ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license. CPR/First Aid/AED training - Desired

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary

Pay: $17.22 - $18.28 per hour

Expected hours: 6 – 8 per week
