United States Power Squadrons / Americas Boating Club is seeking their next Executive Director HQ in Raleigh, NC 

The United States Power Squadrons® /America’s Boating Club® Executive Director manages the organization, overseeing operations, finances, programs, and staff. This individual, subject to the direction of its Board of Directors, implements the plans, policies, programs, fundraising, and stakeholder relationships of the United States Power Squadrons® to achieve its mission and goals. The organization’s Board of Directors, chaired by its Chief Commander, establishes these plans, policies, and programs. United States Power Squadrons®. 

The Executive Director works in partnership with and for the Board of Directors (comprised of its Chief Commander, Department Heads and Immediate Past Chief Commander). This managerial position reports directly and is accountable to the Chief Commander and the Board of Directors and is a highly visible public representative of the United States Power Squadrons® and its mission. The role of the Executive Director, among other things, is to promote, build, and strengthen the organization and its 110 year old mission of promoting recreational boater safety and education in the United States and the fostering of social and fraternal relationships among its members.

Since its founding in 1914, America’s Boating Club® has helped make boating better through boating education and safety programs. The mission statement is “to improve the competence, knowledge, and enthusiasm of the boating community by providing high quality boater education and enjoyable boating and social opportunities”. 

America’s Boating Club® is a nation-wide membership organization comprised of local groups of members who enjoy sharing their passion for boating skills within their membership and with the boating public. They partner with other organizations dedicated to improving the on-water experience, while respecting the environment and laws governing our waterways. They are a not for profit entity incorporated in the State of North Carolina qualified under Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Responsibilities as United States Power Squadron’s® next Executive Director 

Financial Management 
The Executive Director must demonstrate competence in reading, creating, and understanding financial documents, including budgets, cash flow, income statements, balance statements, and statements of functional expenses. Be familiar with accounting principles, audit functions, grant writing, and Federal and State tax regulations as they pertain to a 501c(3) entity. Demonstrate the ability to understand the budget process and ensure adherence to the budget as presented by the budget committee and approved by the Board of Directors. Duties may include but are not limited to: 

Human Resources (HR) 
The Executive Director and the Operations Manager must ensure that on boarding, recruitment, retention, management, development, and compliance are done in adherence with Federal, State and Local Statutes and Regulations. 

The Executive Director is responsible for delegation, decision-making, creating clear staff roles (job descriptions), and supervising collaborative tasks (projects/meetings) to ensure that they are done efficiently, inclusively, and with respect. Duties may include but are not limited to: 

Operations and Technology 
The Executive Director must create the conditions for success at all levels within the United States Power Squadrons/Americas Boating Club.

Industry Relations and Communication 
The Executive Director should develop and maintain strong relationships in our industry sector, with peers, industry associations, the media, and more. The Executive Director should build strong and strategic alliances with other aligned organizations. The Executive Director and the Chief Commander are the public faces of the United States Power Squadrons/Americas Boating Club. In such a role the Executive Director may represent the organization at meetings and gatherings of other organizations in the recreational boating arena.

Compliance and Best Practices 
The Executive Director shall verify the existence of or institute actions that establish/maintain/monitor policies and procedures to stay compliant with all Federal, State, and Local statutes and regulations governing the United States Power Squadrons/Americas Boating Club corporate structure. Ensuring United States Power Squadrons/Americas Boating Club is meeting the highest standards possible for our industry. 

Key lived experiences, attributes, and skillsets sought in the Executive Director 

  • Bachelor’s Degree Desired, Master’s Degree preferred, Non-Profit Membership Association leadership experience a plus. 
  • Experience in hiring and training employees and creating a strong organizational culture in a nonprofit environment. 
  • Experience in managing financial reporting, including adherence to account budgets. 
  • Ability to coordinate with management and report on organizational performance and advocate for the organization. 
  • Ability to oversee daily operations of the organization. 
  • Skill at representing the organization to the public and other partner organizations. 
  • Familiarity with the principles of marketing, social media, and public relations.
  • Experience in the marine sector is a plus. 
  • Experience casting a vision, building a strategy, and leading the successful execution of a plan. 
  • Experience in driving growth 
  • Demonstrated change management effectiveness. 
  • Inspiring communicator who can motivate staff, the Board, partner agencies, and legislative leaders.
  • Knowledge of human resource functions with direct experience in structuring, hiring, onboarding and continually building a team 
  • Creative and strategic thinker 
  • Listener focused on understanding then responding. 
  • Decision-maker who understands when it is time to build consensus and when it is time to act. 
  • Collaborative problem-solver who leverages internal and external skills, perspectives, and alliance. 
  • Ability to travel 20% of the time for overnight or longer events.

Salary is commensurate with the requirements of the position and experience of the candidate – ranging from $110,000 – $120,000 per year. Generous benefit package including: health insurance, retirement, vacation, and wellness days.
