Arlington County, VA is Hiring a NURSE PRACTITIONER (CRISIS INTERVENTION CENTER) Near Arlington, VA

Position Information

The Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking a Nurse Practitioner within its Client Services Entry Bureau (Emergency Services/ Crisis Intervention Center) in the Behavioral Healthcare Division. The Crisis Intervention Center (CIC) serves as the receiving, walk-in, and drop-off facility for Emergency Services (ES) assessments, the site for Office-Based Crisis Stabilization Services (OBCS) and manages in-office support with the Emergency Team. This Nurse will support the ES, Crisis Intervention Center, Same Day Access (SDA), and will participate in an interdisciplinary team including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, clinicians, pharmaceutical and administrative staff to provide services, collaborate with external providers, and incorporate health and wellness needs into the overall plan of care of the clients serviced.

Specific duties include:
  • Providing evaluations and psychiatric management of individuals experiencing a Behavioral Health (BH) or Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) crisis, including psychopharmacological treatment, psychotherapeutic support, and crisis intervention in collaboration with the treatment team and clinical supervisors;
  • Supporting Office-Based Crisis Stabilization (OBCS) services and assisting with medical triage, monitoring, treatment, medication administration, and overseeing medical services provided to clients while in the CIC and/or admitted to OBCS services;
  • Conducting comprehensive assessments of mental health to include patients’ history, functioning, and service needs, as well as ensuring comprehensive healthcare needs are identified and treated;
  • Conducting point of care testing, including vital signs, urine drug screens, and breathalyzer tests as well as ordering and interpreting laboratory data and radiological tests;
  • Participating on an interdisciplinary team including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, pharmaceutical, clinical, and administrative staff to provide services as well as collaborating with external providers and incorporating health and wellness needs into the overall plan of care for clients served;
  • Developing treatment plans, including the prescribing and dispensing of medication, and documenting clinical care and services provided in the electronic health record;
  • Utilizing a variety of clinical interventions, including best practice and evidence-based models;
  • Referring to community health care providers for further assessment and treatment; and
  • Educating clients about their illness(es) and providing them with health management information and techniques.
The successful candidate will possess experience with psychopharmacologic management of individuals with chronic mental illness and comorbid diagnoses. The candidate must also be able to work independently, have effective communication skills, and work well with an interdisciplinary team.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing;
  • Completion of the requirements for graduation from a college or university program accredited by the American Nurses' Association, the National League for Nursing, or the Joint Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine, as an approved nurse practitioner education program.
  • Prescriptive authority in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
  • Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia within 60 days of hire.

Desirable:
Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Experience working in crisis services or a crisis unit such as a hospital emergency department;
  • Experience working in an acute inpatient psychiatric unit; and/or
  • Bilingual ability in English and Spanish.

Special Requirements

Licenses/Certifications: Must be certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in the Commonwealth of Virginia within 60 days of hire. The Board of Nursing and the Board of Medicine may issue certification by endorsement to an applicant who has been certified as a Nurse Practitioner by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory. Must possess a current CPR and AED Certification.

Driver's License:
The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Background Check:
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. A pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check will also be completed before hire.

Employment restrictions:
To ensure that dual relationships are avoided and that employees who are also clients do not relate to their service provider as co-professionals, employees will not be hired by the County to provide or support services to the team or program in which they are current clients:
  • You cannot concurrently receive behavioral health services from Arlington County Community Service Board (CSB) programs while employed in an Arlington County CSB program (exception Crisis Intervention services).
  • At least 24 months must have passed between receipt of CSB services from Arlington County and employment in an Arlington County CSB program.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Flexible schedule Monday through Friday within the core hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The employee must be available to work after-hours and in emergency situations. Work is performed as part of a 24/7 operation and the worker must be available to work shifts as necessary. The employee may be required to participate in an afterhours, On-Call rotation along with other providers.
