Position Information

This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program
Arlington County
Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.
Internship
Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

  • This is not a fully remote opportunity, in-office hours are to be expected.

Department of Environmental Services
The Facilities Design and Construction Bureau within the Department of Environment Services (DES) is seeking an innovative Facilities Planning Intern to provide space management, individual project development, long-range master planning, and capital improvement program management throughout 122 County-owned or leased facilities.
Under the direct supervision of a mentor, responsibilities include:
  • Utilizing software such as AutoCAD, PowerPoint, and Excel to perform duties such as space planning, presenting data and findings, as well as cost estimating;
  • Developing a program of requirements;
  • Contributing to strategic long-term facilities planning and the development of capital improvement plans;
  • Maintaining and organizing project files as well as taking/documenting meeting minutes and action items;
  • Confirming that facilities plans are compliant with County standards and safety requirements; and
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria
Minimum:
Recent, 2023 and/or 2024 college graduates earning either a Bachelor's or a Master's degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship must have:
  • No significant professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and
  • Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.
*Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.
Degree Requirements: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Facilities Management or related discipline. Applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August, 2024 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field as described above.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts;
  • Experience utilizing AutoCAD; and/or
  • Experience and proficiency utilizing the Microsoft Office suite of products (PowerPoint, Project, Excel, etc.).
Special Requirements
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver license, or the ability to use alternative methods of transportation to perform duties at other locations and if applicable, must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicants driving record.

Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) M-F generally between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. with some flexibility within those hours and telework opportunities with prior supervisor approval. Employee must be able to travel and attend occasional local, state, and national events, some which may be outside regular working hours. A reliable means of transportation to and from the office is highly encouraged. This is not a fully remote opportunity.
Employees will be expected to attend in-person classroom trainings as scheduled.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:
Paid Leave: Vacation leave is earned at the rate of five hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases gradually until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Paid parental and family leave benefits are also offered. Leave is pro-rated for part-time employees.
Holidays: There are eleven paid fixed holidays each year, as well as two floating holidays. Initial allotment of floating holidays may vary based on when you are hired.
Health and Dental Insurance: Four group health insurance plans are offered - a health maintenance organization, two plans with in-network only coverage, and a high-deductible plan with in and out-of-network coveerage, along with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Group dental insurance is also offered, with two options for coverage. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. The County also contributes to the HSA.
Life Insurance: Basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance may be purchased for yourself, spouse, and/or children.
Retirement: The County retirement program is made up of three parts: a defined benefit (pension) plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. The County also contributes to this plan. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service.
For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)). The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to save for retirement on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your pay. A variety of investment options are available for the 401(a) and 457 plans.
Other Benefits: The County also offers health care, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; adoption assistance, tuition reimbursement; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other benefits.
Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part-time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.
Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.
Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.
Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
