Arizona Superior Court in Pima County is Hiring an Assistant Director - Jury Services Near Tucson, AZ

Typical hiring range is $66,536 - $79,843 annually; offers for the internal promotions or transfers from the Pima County are determined at the time of the offer.

Assist with managing Pima County Superior Court jury services, including summoning, screening, and assigning petit and grand jurors in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes and related rules. 

• Manage the court-ordered, online pre-reporting juror questionnaires to include managing the number of jurors needed, creating and sending instructional letters to jurors, communicating with judicial staff on the questionnaire process, and communicating with jurors who are excused and those who need to report in person for additional voir dire.
• Research, to include tracking juror yield and utilization, using the court’s databases to ensure efficient and cost-effective practices for the court. 
• Assist in administrative and operational research studies or projects, including statewide jury management communications and meetings.
• Manage court jury services by utilizing and updating the jury management database (currently WebGen). 
• Assist with creating and maintaining Pima County’s master jury list twice a year pursuant to Arizona Revised Statutes.
• Assess the number of reporting jurors needed on a daily basis for Pima County Superior Court, Pima County Consolidated Justice Court and Tucson City Court. Communicate with judicial divisions regarding changes in the trial calendar and panel sizes.
• Assist with managing the payroll process for jurors including Arizona Trial and Digital Evidence Fund (ATDEF) claims, jury fees in civil cases, and pursuant to intergovernmental agreements.
• Assist with the approximately 10 grand juries empaneled annually.
• Assist with directing daily operations of summoning, qualifying, excusing, and postponing of jurors to include communicating via email, phone, and in-person with individual jurors as needed.
• Respond to jury-related requests from other courts including, but not limited to municipal courts and justice courts in Pima County.
• Update jury office forms, web site information and communications as needed.
• Assist with the orientation and instruction of jurors and the random assignment of jurors to trials.
• Coordinate the application and implementation of new laws and jury policies in conjunction with judicial officers, court administration, and administrative office of courts.
• Participate in the recruitment and selection of new employees, training and development of employees, providing work direction, counseling, and the evaluation of performance.
• Assist with establishing and retaining record-keeping procedures and maintain jury records as required by Arizona Revised Statutes and Arizona Supreme Court Rules.
• Maintain effective and professional communication with judges, court personnel, attorneys, criminal justice agencies, the public and prospective jurors.
• Assist with developing the division’s budget.
• Communicate with jurors who fail to appear for their jury service.
• Communicate with vendors providing services to jury operations such as the jury database management and juror payroll.
 

Additional Responsibilities/ Duties:

  • Participate on court committees when requested or appointed.
  • Perform related duties and projects as required. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have strong software skills and knowledge of database management, knowledge of Microsoft Windows-based software, and skills in record-keeping, report preparation, electronic communication and filing.
  • Must have knowledge of management and administrative responsibilities such as division goal setting, budgetary processes, performance management, planning and delivering jury services.
  • Must have project management skills in planning, coordinating, and evaluating jury service processes and office functions.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of judges, judicial staff, court employees, court leadership and administration, attorneys, and the public.
  • Knowledge of court and jury operations, case management and courtroom procedures is preferred.

Requires a bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, criminal justice or related field AND two years of progressively responsible administrative experience, including one year of supervisory work experience. As a substitution for the supervisory experience, equivalent combination of experience, training and/ or education may be considered as approved by Human Resources.

Distinguishing Characteristics: 
This is a classified position that reports to the Director, Jury Services. This position performs duties under limited supervision and assists in directing the work of the employees in the Jury Service’s office.
