Job Summary:
Provides direct and indirect patient care in the critical care setting. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Can respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, can perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement and CQI activities.
Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
2 years of operating room experience required.
License and Certifications:
Registered Nurse License in the state of Texas or compact equivalent
BLS
ACLS (required within 30 days of start date of employment)
PALS (preferred)
Who you will be reporting to:
Director of Surgical Services
What you will do (Roles and Responsibilities):
  • Identifies, assesses, interviews, educates and documents all surgical patients pre-operative.
  • Verifies that Pre-op Checklist is complete (appropriate H & P on record, informed consent accurate, physician pre-op orders administered including antibiotics & hair removal, test results present, surgical site identified and marked, etc)
  • Obtains necessary medications, equipment and positioning aids for each procedure. Supervises and assists surgical scrub tech in opening all supplies onto sterile field.
  • Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during all procedures. Accurately records, handles and labels specimens assuring specimens are delivered to pathology.
  • Transports and admits patient into OR suite, 15 minutes prior to scheduled procedure, accompanied by Anesthesia. Orchestrates transfer of patient onto OR table, warm blanket and safety belt applied.
  • Assists Anesthesia with induction, intubation and insertion of additional lines as indicated.
  • Administers “Time Out” with entire surgical team according to AORN standards.
  • Safely and carefully, places patient in correct surgical anatomical position using appropriate positioning aids to protect bony prominence's and facilitates site exposure.
  • Prepares and drapes patients correctly per Surgeon preference.
  • Carries out established techniques for safe administration of medications and parenteral fluids, as per hospital policies and procedures.
  • Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Completes nurses notes per standards, policies/ procedures and is completes documentations prior to transferring patient to PACU.
  • Effectively communicates with the surgical team members in accounting for all sponges, needles and instruments before, during and after the procedure both verbally and documents in appropriate areas.
  • Follows protocol when counts are inaccurate as described in policy & procedure manual.
  • Gives thorough/concise report of patient's intra-operative condition to PACU Nurse.
  • Follows hospital policy/procedure in accounting for narcotics and other controlled substances
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
