Appledorn Assisted Living Center South is Hiring a Life Enrichment Coordinator Near Holland, MI

Contributing to the health and welfare of others can be draining at times, but at the same time can be truly rewarding. Being a caregiver is a dedicated occupation and is not like any other job. You have agreed to accept the responsibility for providing proper care and service to persons who depend on others for care. This means you agree to follow the guidelines of this living center as you perform your duties and fulfill your responsibilities.

Purpose of this position: Assisted Living encompasses the entire person. Beyond meeting the health, nutrition, and shelter needs of our residents, we strive to meet their emotional, social, psychological, and spiritual needs as well. The Life Enrichment Coordinator is charged with the responsibility to explore, develop and implement events and interactions that meet these needs. This person will develop an overall program to aid in the enrichment of the life of each resident. The LEC will necessarily recruit and coordinate a body of volunteers to support their mission.

Qualifications: Education and experience relevant to working with frail elderly, as well as elderly having dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease). Course work or experience in gerontology. Compassion for serving the frail elderly population. Innovative and creative thinking processes. May be a recreation therapist, COTA, OT, or state-certified Activity Therapist. Empathetic and perceptive to the variations between individuals who reside in the assisted living center.

Essential Duties:

  • 1. Assures residents maintain social interactions, minimize the tendency to become reclusive.
  • 2. Encourage residents’ involvement in Resident Council and other committees.
  • 3. Plan and conduct large and small group events, on-site and off-site events.
  • 4. Maintain interaction with residents who are prone to stay in their room and not participate in events, although NO ONE will be “forced” to participate in any activity.
  • 5. Arrange and coordinate transportation for recreation. a. LEC in homes with access to HPM Independent Living buses must obtain and maintain CDL from the Michigan Secretary of State. b. A driving record will be required and maintained in good standing with all traffic laws.
  • 6. Maximize community involvement with local resources including schools, colleges, senior centers, churches, etc.
  • 7. Holiday decorating and event planning
  • 8. Special events/theme days
  • 9. Newsletter editor
  • 10. Photographing events and submitting to DROPBOX – coordinating with the HPM-ALC Marketing Coordinator for a home Facebook page and other advertising and promotions.
  • 11. Takes resident social history.
  • 12. Coordinate with other personnel to assure resident satisfaction.
  • 13. Recruit, coordinate, train and oversee volunteers, including GEMS
  • 14. Recruit, coordinate and oversee the LE Assistant (if approved): Timely completion of performance reviews for assistant: 90 day and annual reviews.
  • 15. Coordinate or lead a Dementia support group for families, where applicable.
  • 16. Coordinate GEMS training with RSC for resident support staff, housekeeping, and culinary staff.
  • 17. Follow guidelines specified in the operations manual, as well as the state and local guidelines, Teepa Snow’s GEMS, Alzheimer’s Association Care guidelines, and best practices for senior activity programs.
  • 18. Compliance with all applicable and governing laws, rules, and regulations.
  • 19. Maintain compliance with budget: salary, supplies, entertainment, transportation
  • 20. Other duties as assigned or as may be necessary to assure that the goals and objectives of this living center are fulfilled.

General Responsibilities: 

  • 1. Participate in family and community events as directed, including Family GEMS training.
  • 2. Participate in evening and weekend Manager on Duty (MOD) rotation.
  • 3. Coordinate fundraising events
  • 4. Comply with Life Safety policies and participate in periodic drills;
  • 5. Participate in educational and training opportunities;
  • 6. Report safety and health hazards to your supervisor or the Maintenance Supervisor
  • 7. Report any observed concerns or changes in a resident to the Shift Supervisor

  • 1. The LEC is a member of the Management Team for this assisted living center and is expected to maintain professional standards of behavior at work and outside of work.
  • 2. The LEC is expected to communicate professionally, maturely, and respectfully with all persons who come in contact with this assisted living center.
  • 3. Practices HPM Core Values: Honesty, Quality, Respect, Teamwork, Potential, and Balance.
  • 4. Be a goodwill ambassador for this living center
  • 5. Work cooperatively with others on the same shift and across shifts
  • 6. Report to work as scheduled
  • 7. Treat all residents with dignity and respect
  • 8. Compliance with all Resident Rights including confidentiality and HIPAA Privacy rules
  • 9. Compliance with the guidelines stated in the Employee Handbook
  • 10. Follows Universal Precautions and good infection control practices.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hourly Wage and benefits as stated in the Employee Handbook.
  • Eligible for a 2% increase in pay rate after 90 days of employment with a satisfactory review.
  • Annual increase in pay rate is merit-based, as determined by a comprehensive, written performance review conducted by the supervisor and Administrator.
