Antelope Valley Medical Center is Hiring a House Supervisor - Nursing Administration - Per Diem/Nights - Req#1996765267 Near Lancaster, CA

Job Objective:

The House Supervisor is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for the coordination and evaluation of all phases of patient care. The House Supervisor works with all the units to facilitate the flow of patients in a timely and efficient manner.

Position Summary:

Responsible for supervising, coordinating and correlating the activities of nursing and ancillary services during the shift on behalf of Administrators and Department Directors in their absence. Coordinated patient admissions / transfers, staff the inpatient units and ED. Makes all necessary or emergent decisions and / or decisions which affect the delivery of patient care. Fosters an environment of open communication by providing direction and guidance to all staff and acts as a mentor / advisor / negotiator when needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Mission, Vision, Core Values and Strategic Plan

  • Develops staff understanding of their role in supporting the department’s budget.

  • Provides department staffing that maximizes the ability to meet needs at optimum cost and assigns staff based on regulatory / procedural requirements. Able to reassign staff as needed throughout the shift.
  • Utilizes staffing plans to maximize fiscal and operational benefits.
  • Cross trains Float Pool staff to maximize productivity within the nursing units.
  • Implements and adheres to productivity goals.
  • Escalates staff concerns appropriately using proper chain of command.

D. Competence

  • Demonstrates and applies knowledge, skill and ability in the area of expertise to fulfill operating requirements, job description and department competencies.
  • Stays current with healthcare industry technical / legal / regulatory changes through training and development.
  • Adheres to all AVH Compliance and Integrity Program policies and procedures.

E. Supervision

  • Supports and complies with the hospital’s policy and procedures. Able to direct others according to established policy.
  • Deals effectively with diversity, creates a work environment that optimizes the ability of diverse groups working together effectively and manages all staff equitably.
  • Establishes priorities and coordinates projects and resources in accordance with the Strategic Plan.
  • Maintains a high level of productivity and delegates appropriately to meet deadlines for reports, huddles, etc.
  • Fosters trust, respect and teamwork by setting department guidelines, communicates expectations and assists staff in the achievement of outcomes.
  • Assists staff in meeting department goals and objectives. Provides ongoing feedback on performance indicators and feedback to Unit Manager / Director.

  • Contributes to the ongoing assessment of competency of staff within the department and identifies competencies that need further development or growth through communication with Department Manager / Director and / or CNO.
  • Identifies and recommends resources for Nursing Administration and assists with training of new staff as a positive role model.

H. Quality and Performance Improvement

  • Ensures that the department’s quality indicators are implemented and measured.
  • Provides guidance and direction to improve department’s performance on an ongoing basis.
  • Has leadership oversight to improve quality metrics to decrease Falls, HAPI, CAUDI, etc.

I. Human Resources Management

  • Oversees Float Pool staff and assists the Director of Nursing Office in retaining competent staff in accordance with the staffing needs of the department and Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Retains competent staff in accordance with the staffing needs of the department and Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Ensures adherence to ALL that Human Resources policies and procedures are followed.
  • Provides an ongoing assessment of competency and performance for all staff with feedback to Managers / Directors.
  • Ensure Float Pool performance evaluations are completed timely upon request.
  • Provides direction and guidance to the Float Pool and all staff to maintain high levels of performance and quality service.
  • Coaches and provides direction for improved performance and involves staff in meeting department goals and objectives.
  • Develops staff by providing orientation, in-service training and continuing education opportunities.

J. Organizational Effectiveness

  • Ensures that standards of accrediting / licensing agencies that impart the department and hospital are met.
  • Participates with colleagues on hospital committees that assist the organization in achieving its objectives.

K. Risk Management

  • Promotes cooperative involvement of staff in all risk management activities and investigations.
  • Follows the policies related to safety and risk management (infection control, falls, codes, etc.).

L. Information Management

  • Ensures that staff maintain the confidentiality of patient / hospital information and data.

M. Patient Safety

  • Ensures that staff adhere to the hospital’s Patient Safety Program and Plan.
  • Assists with prevention through observation and coaching staff accordingly.

N. Environment of Care

  • Ensures that the delivery of services reflects efficient and effective utilization of resources.
  • Ensures the use of safety, infection prevention and control policies and procedures and personal protective equipment are utilized properly.

O. Emergency and Capacity Management

  • Assesses patients in various areas of the hospital to ensure proper placement. Responsible for insuring patient needs are being met while awaiting transfer.
  • Completes patient transfers into and out of facility following EMTALA Regulations.
  • Directs activities of the Rapid Response Team.
  • Responds to various emergency codes in the hospital, such as code blue, code stroke and code gray. Responsible for the coordination of care during the code.
  • Promotes an environment in which the healthcare team can function cooperatively.
  • Communicates effectively intra- and inter-departmentally at all levels, including patients, visitors, and physicians.
  • Responsible for problem-solving and crisis intervention related to physicians, patient, families and staff.
  • Follows chain of command appropriately.
  • Communicates with Administrator On-Call, ED Charge Nurse, and DHS for implementation of “Crisis Diversion” situations in the ED.

P. Population Specific Competencies (Patient Care / Patient Services)

  • Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability to provide care / service based on the specific patient population. Demonstrates, modifies and adapts work behavior in meeting the patient’s specific needs and / or providing the services required. Able to direct the Nursing Administration team accordingly.
  • Demonstrates the ability to focus on the specific needs of the patient population and provide the care of service needed. Supports Charge Nurses with different situations.
  • Demonstrates appropriate communication skills for the patient population served with all disciplines.
  • Ensures ED patients get in inpatient bed according to established timeframes.

Q. Job Specific Duties

  • Adheres to the department dress code and ensures other staff follow the dress code as well.
  • Ability to arrange work with established priorities.
  • Function as the Incident Commander and open the Incident Command Center as needed.
  • Responds to all codes and oversees response, care coordination, level of care needs and post-code reports as required or requested.
  • Resource for all staff regarding policies, procedures and processes.
  • Provides service recovery when needed for patients and families.
  • Rounds on all units a minimum of every four (4) hours, assessing patient safety, acuity and census changes. ED and ICU every two (2) hours.
  • Problem solves using critical thinking with other Managers, Directors and Charge Nurses.
  • Responsible for checking in with Float Pool staff and registry / travel staff as the nursing leader on shift.
  • Staffing for all inpatient nursing units to include ED, WIP and PACU upon request.
  • Knowledgeable on Decedent Affairs with correct paperwork, as well as Coroner’s requirements. Able to guide Nursing Office Secretary and to ensure accuracy and movement of decedents.
  • Knowledgeable on how to staff nursing units (except OR and women’s unit) and able to communicate shortages to Manager, Director and Director of Nursing Office and / or CNO.
  • Serves as the Bed Huddle Leader engaging nursing and ancillary staff for report to identify any obstacles for sate patient care or timely discharge as requested.
  • Able to complete “ReddiNet” La County communication within established time frames and assist the Bed Control staff.
  • Proficient with navigation through the patient chart, especially for bed tracking and assignment.

R. Leadership and Management

  • Adheres to standards of practice.

  • Ensures staff adheres to AVH policies and procedures.
  • Participates in Disciplinary Process as requested or required.

  • Knowledgeable in EMR used in all areas of the hospital.

Education and Experience:

Education

  • BSN preferred
  • Leadership training or comparable experience.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the hospital settings required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience in the hospital settings required.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • PALS certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • CPI certification required within 2 months of hire.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in hectic and changeable atmosphere of the hospital. Requires frequent walking and climbing stairs.
