Description

The Chemical Process Engineer plays a critical role within Anoplate’s Manufacturing Engineering team by being a primary technical resource that supports day to day operations, ensures stability and reliability of electroplating and conversion coating processes, leads the investigation and troubleshooting efforts of processing issues, and supports the achievement of critical business and operational targets in safety, environmental sustainability, quality, throughput, and performance by developing and implementing continuous improvement initiatives within their assigned areas of responsibility.

This creative and proactive problem solver, is a hands-on and process-oriented professional who knows how to build relationships across all levels of the organization, promotes collaborative & cross-functional work, is biased towards action, and thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. In addition to providing technical guidance and support to the operational teams, the Chemical Process Engineer develops, communicates, and executes tank / equipment down recovery plans; collects and analyzes process data and trends and leads the development of improved processes and methods; engages with customers and suppliers in technical product & process investigations; supports the creation and maintenance of process specifications; and contributes to problem solving efforts with root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions. 

 In This Role You Will:

Production & Quality Support 

  • Provide technical guidance to production, quality & environmental labs in the in the evaluation of day-to-day process stability, capability, and yields, and recommend improvements where applicable.
  • Support cross-functional efforts to develop & execute recovery plans for equipment and process down events, investigate and troubleshoot day to day chemical process problems and deviations, and product performance or quality issues.
  • Support the problem-solving process by working cross-functionally in the collection and analysis of process data, planning & executing process trials, conducting root cause analysis, and recommending and implementing corrective actions and providing follow through to evaluate improvement effectiveness.
  • Provides technical support to production and quality in engagements with customers and suppliers.
  • Conduct line side audits within assigned finishes to ensure process compliance.
  • Support the internal quality teams in the investigation of repetitive / systemic issues, and identifying improvement opportunities. 

Process Improvement

  • Supports the development, evaluation, and implementation of initiatives to continuously improve the safety, environmental sustainability, quality, throughput, cost and performance of their assigned finishing areas (using lean manufacturing practices where applicable). 
  • Analyze ERP and other process software data (e.g. Truechem) in order to identify opportunities for improvements and modifications to existing processes.
  • Support project teams in the implementation of modifications to existing chemical processes (replacement products, equipment, etc.), as well as new product / process introduction and volume increases. 
  • Work as part of team on capital projects, ensuring cost, schedule, and performance goals are met or exceeded. 

R&D support

  • Collaborates with customers, suppliers, and internal teams in the investigation and development of new or improved chemical processes and capabilities, and introduction of changes.
  • Develop and integrate new chemical solutions in support of new business integration and market shifts as identified by sales and applications engineering. 
  • Recommends & supports the implementation of improved / advanced testing methods to ensure process stability.

Others

  • Perform updates to documented procedures for chemical processes, FMEA’s and control plans as needed.
  • Develop standardized work methods and provide instruction to operations for new processes and improvements as needed.

Requirements

 Your Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  •  Strong PC skills (Office, ERP, analytical software, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation & testing specifications, data collection & analysis, and creation of reports & communication of technical information (analytical thinking, process orientation)
  • General understanding of quality systems and standards (e.g., ISO &/or NADCAP, ASTM, etc.) 
  • Knowledge of quality or statistical processes, FMEA’s and process control plans
  • Basic root cause analysis and problem-solving skills (use of formal tools)
  • Basic understanding of continuous improvement and lean methodologies 
  • Basic project management skills (preferred)
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment, with attention to detail, ability to produce results and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to make sound decisions with limited information.
  • Hands-on, comfortable working in shop-floor & lab settings.
  • Meeting facilitation, presentation & persuasion skills.
  • Negotiation skills (working with suppliers).

Your Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in technical science (chemical, mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing science). 
  • Basic understanding of chemical, electroplating and surface finishing processes (e.g. AESF).
  • 3 – 5 years of relevant work experience in a manufacturing or processing environment, R&D process related position.
