Anderson County Veterans Service Office is hiring for a Veterans Service Director. The best candidate will have ample experience in the field. POSITION PURPOSE: The Director of Anderson County Veterans Services has the solemn, unwavering mission to serve the veterans of Anderson County and their dependents in obtaining the entitlements they justly deserve. We will serve them with dignity and compassion; work as an advocate to ease the anxiety and confusion of those who seek our assistance ensuring they receive quality care, support, entitlements and the recognition earned by their service to the nation. Plan, coordinate and administer the Veterans Service Program for Anderson County to enhance citizens' awareness of the sacrifices that veterans have made.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interview, advise and counsel veterans and their dependents concerning all rights, privileges and benefits such as pensions, compensation, education, hospitalization, insurance, home loans, burials & death benefits, discharge reviews, medical care, veteran's preference and other miscellaneous benefits in which they may be entitled to under and law, state or federal.
  • Directly responsible to the Anderson County Veterans Advisory Committee. Establish and maintain office history (i.e., client visits, claims files, phone calls, out of office visits, etc.) Develop monthly / quarterly reports to full commission providing data for historical documentation.
  • Prepare formal claims and compile appropriate supporting documents and evidence in support of claims for appropriate agency; review denied claims and assist veterans and their dependents in preparing rebuttals to adverse benefits/decisions for presentation to the claims service for prosecution.
  • Establish and staff Satellite Offices for the outer reaches of the county to allow for extended and quality services to reach veterans and their dependents unable to travel to the county seat.
  • Conduct visits to veterans and their dependents, which are in hospitals, nursing homes, Assisted Living Facilities and private residences, provide comradery and assistance in filing claims as necessary.
  • Coordinate and assist local Funeral Homes in obtaining necessary documentation to ensure Veterans are provided their entitled burial benefits.
  • Perform as the coordinator on County Veterans' activities, to include the Memorial Day Remembrance Program and participate with other county Veterans activities such as Veterans Appreciation Breakfast.
  • Provide availability for emergencies, after normal hours and over weekends, by maintaining cellular communications to assist and provide guidance in the event of a veteran's death, homelessness or other emergency.

NECESSARY WORK REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: High School Graduate.
  • Must be able to understand, interpret and apply the various laws, regulations, and directives relating to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs policies, and procedures.
  • Must be able to express him/herself reasonably well in writing.
  • Must have workable computer skills.
  • Must be able to complete the accreditation certification program conducted by the Tennessee Department of Veterans Services and maintain that accreditation certification.
  • Must keep abreast of and maintain working knowledge of various organizations and functioning of State and Federal Government Offices.

  • Honorably Discharged veteran from one of the branches of the Armed Forces.
