Position Summary:

Be the difference and put your passion into action become a Scholar Coach! Our state has some of the largest education disparities in the nation, but together we can help change that! Join an innovative team dedicated to advancing equity and helping all students succeed.

As a Scholar Coach, youll serve at a local school and be embedded in a K-3 classroom. Youll partner with the classroom teacher to promote scholastic engagement and help students become better readers. Every day, youll also meet with students one-on-one or in pairs to provide extra practice and build skills. With training and on-site coaching, you'll be prepared to help kids succeed. Your commitment during school hours throughout the academic year guarantees a significant impact.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with the Total Learning Classroom Initiative of Reading Corps. Join our AmeriCorps team to empower kids through reading! Unleash your passion become a Scholar Coach and be the difference!

How Youll Take Action

  • Be a caring adult whos focused on helping students build their skills and confidence.
  • Track student progress and regularly meet with the schools on-site coach.
  • Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software.
  • Commit to your own growth as a tutor through coaching, training, and professional development.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school events and share your experience with the community to raise awareness.

It Starts with a Passion

Reading Corps takes everyday people and trains them to be great Scholar Coaches. Anyone can become a Scholar Coach as long as they have a passion to make a difference and meet the following minimum qualifications.

By the time they begin their service, our Scholar Coaches are:

  • Dependable and have a history of good attendance.
  • Able to understand and follow instructions.
  • Open to making improvements based on feedback.
  • Capable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with students.
  • Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online).
  • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing.
  • 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.*
  • Able to successfully complete a background check.

*Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve in our programs at this time. DACA applicants may be eligible for Americorps VISTA programs. For more information, click here.

Compensation & Perks Package:

While youre making a difference, youll receive a paycheck (stipend) every two weeks and additional perks! As an AmeriCorps program we have both federally provided benefits and program specific benefits.

Federal Benefits include:

  • Up to $5176.50 in Education Award
    • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award* which can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55 at the start of their service term may gift their award to a family member. Click Here for more information.
  • Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment.
  • Time accrual toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Program Specific Benefits by hours commitment per week

35 Hours

  • $1150 stipend paid every two weeks.
  • Individual health insurance monthly premium 100% covered.
  • Child care assistance based on family size and income.

25 Hours

  • $785 stipend paid every two weeks.
