The American Express Design Language System saves teams time and resources by providing ready to use front-end components and design guidelines that bring consistency to the American Express customer journey. Containing over 300 plug-and-play components and styles, DLS supports multiple frameworks today and is looking to expand their web components. Carefully maintained guidelines provide clear rules as well as best practices to help teams adopting the design system and setting the standard in design across the enterprise. By providing DLS to the entire enterprise, we are able to dramatically improve teams’ strategic agility, speed to market, transparency, and the business value they drive.
The library and guidelines are maintained by a team of designers, product managers, and engineers that are constantly working to evolve the library through user research, testing and ideation.
The Role
As a Designer on the DLS team, you will be a key player on a small-but-mighty team that drives impact across the entire enterprise. You will work on all aspects of the design system, from creating new components and assets to updating guidelines or conducting audits on how the design system is performing. You will be expected to not only pick up planned work from the backlog, but proactively bring new suggestions and ideas to the team on how to continuously improve our product. As a member of the DLS, you will be both a contributor to the library but also an advocate within the community. This may take the form of troubleshooting issues over Slack or giving presentations to other teams.
Responsibilities
- Creating and maintaining complex symbols, tokens and libraries in Figma. Creating and maintaining visual assets such as icons, flags and brand assets
- Confidently and clearly communicate design decisions through presentations to peers, partners and cross-functional leadership, as well as host workshops, and create educational resources
- Responsible for designing with an Accessibility first mindset. Must follow WCAG guidelines
- Actively improve design process and workflow for broader design organization.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, design leads and other cross-functional partners to define product requirements and deliver against them
- Actively engage with other designers to exchange ideas, share skills, and provide mentorship for teammates
- Collaborate with global design, product, and engineering teams to drive UI pattern usage and to industry best practice standards to American Express
- Responsible forstrong communicationskills and to be able to articulate design decisions internally and externally, self-governing and working autonomously
- Mentors associate designers and peers and may have a direct report
Minimum Qualifications
- 7years experience in UX/UI product design, design systems
- A portfolio that showcases your work, provides details of your project roles, and shows examples of component or system designs from inception through delivery
- Experience with design systems and a clear understanding of how they provide value
- Experience working on customer-facing applications with focus on UI Design
- Must have experience with WCAG
- Knowledge of web implementation technologies (HTML, CSS, React). No coding required in this role, but you'll need the ability to articulate technical considerations of your designs to your developers
- Experience creating and maintaining complex symbols, tokens and libraries in Figma
- Must have strong organizational, technical and creative problem-solving skills
- Must work well in a dynamic, complex environment and under deadline pressures
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with Agile in JIRA/Confluence
- Experience working with Lean UX
- Motion design and animation skills a plus
- Additional experience using Sketch
An online portfolio demonstrating samples of design deliverables is required to apply for this role.
Salary Range: $90,000.00 to $165,000.00 annually bonus benefits
