Job Title:

Mechanical Designer II

Position Summary:

As a Mechanical Designer II at American Crane & Equipment Corporation, you will play a crucial role in the design process, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our overhead cranes, hoists, and other heavy equipment. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, interface with customers, and contribute to the successful execution of projects.

Qualifications: 

  • Minimal 2-year technical school degree in Mechanical Design/Engineering
  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred but not required
  • 3-5 years of experience in mechanical design for heavy equipment or related industries preferred
  • Proficient in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of structural and mechanical design principles
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Order Review and Resolution:

  • Review new orders from the sales department, comparing specifications to sales proposals
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies with sales representatives
  • Conduct thorough checks for omissions or errors in the order

Design Calculations and Component Selection:

  • Perform basic structural and mechanical design calculations
  • Select components from manufacturer's catalogs and generate purchase requisitions

Drawing Preparation and Approval:

  • Prepare arrangement and layout drawings of equipment
  • Verify completeness and correctness of drawings before customer approval
  • Interface with customers, as directed by the Project Manager, to obtain approval and address design-related queries

Detail Drawing Oversight:

  • Check detail drawings prepared by Mechanical Designer I for completeness and correctness
  • Prepare detail drawings when the Mechanical Designer I is not available

Collaboration and Problem-Solving:

  • Collaborate with shop personnel to address questions and resolve issues during the manufacturing process
  • Work with vendors of purchased items to answer questions and resolve problems

On-Site Verification:

  • Visit customer facilities when necessary to review projects and verify dimensions
  • Demonstrate the ability to climb onto equipment for inspection purposes

Vendor Communication:

  • Interface with vendors of purchased items to address questions and resolve problems

Other Duties:

  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisors

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work a minimum of full-time hours; overtime required based on Engineering Department schedules
  • Hand/eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers, and various pieces of office equipment
  • Occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle and/or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms
  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; communicate; smell
  • Occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus

Work Environment

  • Ability to work in outside weather conditions when required
  • Ability to work near moving mechanical parts and in precarious places
  • Ability to work comfortably and safely at varying heights
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles and vibration
