American College Healthcare Executives is Hiring an Editor Near Chicago, IL

PURPOSE

The purpose of this job is to serve our members, customers, and co-workers.

SUMMARY

This position is responsible for working with authors, vendors, faculty, and freelance staff to oversee the production process, from manuscript to printing, two journals, Frontiers of Health Services Management and the Journal of Healthcare Management, and additional content across Professional Development and Health Administration Press.
ACHE is a hybrid work environment, requiring 2 days per week in our Chicago loop office.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Journal Managing Editor Responsibilities 50% of Time
    • Reviews all journal content for completeness and political sensitivities.
    • Generates ideas for JHM column topics and interview subjects.
    • Vets JHM column authors, Frontiers feature authors, and interviewees
    • Manages correspondence with academic editors, authors, and editorial board members.
    • Organizes annual editorial board meetings, including setting of agendas, taking meeting minutes, and providing other support as needed.
    • Develops and enforces official production schedules.
    • Copyedits/rewrites/proofreads manuscripts or oversees freelancer’s copyediting/rewriting/proofreading.
    • Supervises work of typesetting, printing, and other vendors (e.g., Wolters Kluwer) to ensure that service level agreements are met.
    • Monitors schedule and budget for all issues.
    • Manages printing and mailing operations.
  • Content Acquisitions 45% of Time
    • Identifies potential new faculty/authors to fill content related gaps
    • Works with new faculty/authors on a trial basis to determine fit and approach (e.g. via webinars, blogs, etc.)
    • Reads and evaluates proposals to help determine content potential
    • Identifies content development and developmental editing needs for manuscripts and proposals for educational content
    • Reports status of acquisitions activities.
    • Researches and recommends methods for improving acquisitions processes that will extend our reach and impact
  • Other Support 5% of Time
    • Participates in long-term planning and new product development.
    • Assists in the creation, maintenance, and revision of templates for Chapter Education.
    • Provides support and updates of ACHE’s Competency Assessment Tools.
    • Provides staff support in writing and editing and in developing and evaluating process improvements.
    • Trains new editors.
    • Performs special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Baccalaureate degree in healthcare, journalism, or related field required. Minimum of five years’ experience in manuscript editing and writing. Book and journal experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of healthcare industry required. Knowledge of ACHE member community preferred.
  • Ability to use a variety of software programs, such as word processing, spreadsheet, and soft proofing, required.
  • Must be computer proficient.
  • Must have strong customer service orientation.
  • Must have strong team orientation.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must have regular and predictable attendance.
