American Academy of Actuaries is Hiring a Manager, Volunteer and Member Engagement Near Washington, DC

ABOUT THE ACADEMY

The American Academy of Actuaries (Academy) is a D.C.-based 20,000 member professional association whose mission is to serve the public and the U.S. actuarial profession. Academy members include consultants, corporate executives and staff, regulators, government officials, academics, and retired actuaries. Their areas of practice cover pensions, life insurance, casualty insurance, health insurance, financial reporting, risk management, and more.

The Academy assists public policymakers on all levels by providing leadership, objective expertise, and actuarial advice on risk and financial security issues. The Academy also sets qualification, practice, and professionalism standards for actuaries credentialed by one or more of the five U.S.-based actuarial organizations in the United States.

OVERVIEW

This manager-level position is responsible for developing and executing the delivery of programs in support of the almost 20,000 members and the 1,000 Academy current volunteers who work tirelessly to fulfill its mission and future, prospective volunteers hoping to get involved. This professional reports to the Director, Membership Growth and Engagement and collaborates with Academy staff across all departments and committees to plan and execute programs to support the volunteer experience for members who choose to get involved in supporting the Academy’s mission to serve. Additionally, the manager plays an essential role in supporting the Director with the member and volunteer engagement and membership recruitment activities. The manager is a creative, solutions-oriented professional who wields a deep understanding of volunteer management and engagement as well as various technologies (such as Higher Logic and others) to develop and deliver virtual, online, and in-person volunteer programs that foster a sense of community and connection.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Volunteer Engagement and Growth

  • Working across the organization, the manager will lead membership campaigns related to volunteering, new member acquisition, and prospecting.
  • Develop and implement a strategy and process to recruit, onboard, train, recognize, and develop current and future volunteer leaders.
  • Provide program management for all volunteer activities, including long and short-term micro-volunteering opportunities, collaborating across departments and with staff liaisons to deliver value-focused, responsive resources to enhance the volunteer experience.
  • Manage and produce the Academy volunteer training and onboarding process and oversee use of the Higher Logic platform in support of delivering a seamless and engaging volunteer community and experience, including collaborating with departments to train/guide liaisons, identify topics, coordinate content with subject matter experts, produce and execute delivery of events, launch a volunteer mentor program, and evaluate and analyze performance results.
  • Support the development, promotion, and execution of the Academy’s Annual Call for Volunteers process, ensuring that volunteer opportunities are identified and promoted effectively, the survey tool is developed and managed appropriately, and interested members are selected and communicated with efficiently. Maintain a listing of available volunteer opportunities on the organization’s website, in various publications, and on other platforms.
  • Maintain the volunteer database and provide timely and relevant reporting and communications on status updates and performance metrics to Academy leadership for assessing the effectiveness of volunteer engagement, including online and in-person feedback solicitation with various volunteer groups, conducting periodic feedback surveys, conducting annual tenure audits, and more.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with affinity groups and other third parties to recruit volunteer leaders and monitor leading practices in volunteer management and engagement within the association industry.
  • Develop and implement an annual approach for volunteer recognition and oversee all volunteer awards processes including serving as staff liaison to support the selection process for various taskforces.
  • Travel to various Academy events and meetings throughout the year as needed to promote and recruit volunteers, including drafting and delivering speeches to prospect and employer audiences about the Academy role and value of volunteer opportunities.
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison for the organization’s Volunteer Engagement Committee.
  • Assist the Senior Director, Membership and Director, Member Growth and Engagement with the successful execution of special projects as needed.

Member Engagement and Growth

  • In partnership with the Manager, Outreach, oversees all aspects of customer service to ensure the highest quality experience for members and non-members with a focus on member and volunteer recruitment.
  • Supports program to increase and strengthen membership engagement and satisfaction with current members and expand outreach to prospective members.
  • Collaborate with membership and communications teams to reinforce member and employer value and service to various stakeholders including employers, policymakers/regulators, current and prospective members.
  • Support the Director, Member Growth, and Engagement with vital engagement strategies and providing metrics relating to engagement among members, employers and other key audiences.

Member Growth: Acquisition and Retention

  • Plan, develop, implement, and track new member and reinstatement acquisition programs with a focus on prospecting new members, lead follow-up, member get a member, lapse member campaigns, and similar strategies to grow further membership. Track, analyze and report membership KPI’s including joins, rejoins, growth, retention rate overall. Collaborate with membership and communications team to ensure membership recruitment is consistent, ongoing, and effective.

Other

  • Performs certain tasks in the absence of the Senior Director, Membership, Director, Membership Growth and Engagement, and Coordinator, Membership.
  • Work as a member of the team to respond to member and organization needs as they change.
  • Other duties to be assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Association Management, Member/Volunteer Management, or a related business field; and a minimum of 5 years related professional experience and/or training within volunteer management and engagement for an association, professional body, or other non-profit organization. Association management experience, preferably within membership and volunteer management is required. Strong background in public speaking, relationship building, and extensive project management experience. Technical experience with membership/volunteer community/mentoring technology (such as Higher Logic) strongly preferred. CAE and/or CMP a plus.
