JOB DESCRIPTION

Physical Education Coach

At Alternatives in Action (AIA) we believe young people are powerful. In our schools, we see young people

experience empowerment that will help them shape a secure future for themselves, their families, and their
communities.
In 2001, Alternatives in Action opened the first youth-designed charter high school in the country, Alternatives
in Action High School (AIAHS), formerly the Bay Area School of Enterprise. Our high school focuses on
supporting youth who have been unsuccessful in traditional learning environments and are looking for a small,
relationship-based alternative. Serving 160 youth, AIAHS supports youth to be college, career and community
ready through project-based learning and youth-adult partnerships. We believe that all youth are wise,
resourceful, and capable of making positive changes in their own lives and in the community. Our teaching staff
are called “coaches” to reinforce the roles adults play in facilitating youth’s learning and development. We ask
that teachers hold a frame of restorative justice in our classrooms and beyond.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
At AIAHS, teachers are considered coaches because they are more than instructors or facilitators. Based on the
youth-coach model, we believe neither teacher nor student is passive in the relationship. The P.E Coach position
is part-time, with possibility of full-time work. The position will work with a range of 9th – 12th grade learners
to develop their physical, cognitive, social emotional, and civic skills. Specifically, this coach will integrate real
world project development, a youth development process, and P.E content into a holistic experience.

  • Be committed to co-creating a healthy school environment using an asset based approach and trauma-
informed care.
  • Be an innovative educator who isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves in a non-traditional setting and facilitate
both academic and real-world skill-building.
  • Be a collaborative leader who understands and enjoys the challenges and opportunities with small schools.
  • Be a passionate advocate for education as a key social justice strategy for high-risk urban youth.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develops supportive, positive relationships with students.
  • Ensures that curriculum is academically rigorous and fulfills specified course requirements.
  • Implements standards based, common core aligned challenging and coherent curriculum.
  • Collaborate with coaching staff and community projects coordinators to create an innovative;
  • Encourages critical thinking and student self-assessment.
  • Develops relationships with individual learners to better guide them through their educational and social
development.
  • Consistent practice of differentiation and scaffolding strategies and techniques.
  • Supports overall program quality and school improvement as part of the AIAHS team.
  • Participates in staff meetings, parent meetings, and community events as part of the staff team.

Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual Spanish Preferred
  • 1 years’ experience teaching physical education
  • Experience in alternative, youth development, and/or experiential learning settings
  • Experience with educational assessment tools and methodologies
  • Experience and/or strong interest in community development
  • Ability to work in a youth friendly, collaborative, student centered environment
  • Ability to use authority, set boundaries, and hold high standards with youth
  • Experience working with diverse groups, learners, and communities

Required Licenses and Certificates:

  • Clearance through Criminal History Background Check and Health Screening.
Classification: Part-time, with possibility for full time contract position beginning July 25, 2022 through June
9, 2023 for the academic school year.
Compensation: Competitive, depending on qualifications
