Job Description

Job Title: Tutor/Counselor Part Time (25 hours per week) Reports to: Site Director Position Description The Tutor/Counselor assists GED instructors with preparing students academically to successfully pass the General Educational Development (GED) test and transition into the work force, post-secondary education or vocational training. The Tutor/Counselor must proficiently provide Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies tutoring/instruction. This position requires a willingness to engage and build relationships with students re-entering an academic learning environment. Responsibilities and Duties: · Provide individual and small group tutoring/counseling to students with diverse learning styles and skills, during and after class hours · Assist students with improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to clarify subject area problems, work on strengthening test-taking strategies, learning and study skills · Other assistance might involve review of subject materials and discussion of the text with instructors, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers, writing/homework assignments, or working on solutions to problems · Meet with instructors to access and coordinate students' subject area needs · Maintain high learning expectations · Exhibit effective classroom management skills · Meet with program Mentors to discuss and evaluate students' social/emotional needs · Complete and turn in all required paperwork and/or documentation of services Tutoring is a supplement to classroom instruction. Tutors are not expected to know everything about the subject(s) they tutor but must collaborate with instructors to strengthen deficiencies. Qualifications · 4-year College Degree is required , unless applicant is a college student working toward degree ( Education, Social Work, or Psychology background ) - equivalent experience is acceptable · Minimum of 3 years' experience working with adolescents - at risk youth and/or DCFS youth · Some knowledge of the child welfare system preferred · Ability to read and interpret an Individual Education Plan (IEP) preferred · An A or B average in the subject(s) to be tutored and instructor recommendation, if currently a student · Responsible, dependable, honest, and mature · Friendly, patient, and sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population Company Description Alternative Schools Network is a dynamic non-profit which supports underserved and jobless youth and young adults in Chicago with successful education, employment, and support services.
