A medical assistant is a healthcare professional who performs a variety of administrative and clinical tasks to support physicians and other healthcare providers. The job duties of a medical assistant may vary depending on the type of healthcare facility they work in, but typically include the following:

Administrative Duties:

• Answering phones and scheduling appointments
• Greeting patients and directing them to exam rooms
• Updating and maintaining patient medical records
• Handling billing and insurance claims
• Performing basic bookkeeping tasks
• Ordering and maintaining office supplies and equipment

Clinical Duties:

• Taking patient medical histories and vital signs
• Assisting with physical exams and medical procedures
• Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens
• Performing basic laboratory tests
• Administering medications and vaccines as directed by healthcare provider
• Providing patient education and instruction on at-home care
• Sterilizing medical instruments and preparing exam rooms for patients

To work as a medical assistant, individuals typically need to complete a postsecondary education program that includes both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical training.
