Algiers Charter is Hiring a Reading Specialist-Elementary Near Orleans, LA

Position Summary
The Reading Specialist is to assist and support classroom teachers and administrators in providing balanced and effective reading programs for all students.
As part of your duties, you will be assigned the following responsibilities:
Intervention/Direct Services
  • Work with and support the classroom teacher in providing a balanced reading program.
  • Assist in implementing and monitoring of the reading curriculum.
  • Assist in reading curriculum revision and development. 
  • Assist with the selection of appropriate reading resources related to identified needs at the school site.
  • Assist teachers in the provision of appropriate intensive intervention instruction for struggling students, including those who are limited English proficient.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of subject matter.
  • Communicate high learning expectations for all students.
  • Apply principles of learning and effective teaching in instructional delivery.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for teaching students from diverse backgrounds with different learning styles and special needs and which enhance the application of critical, creative and evaluative thinking capabilities.
  • Use appropriate material, technology, and other resources to help meet learning needs of all students.
  • Provide appropriate instructional modification for students with special needs, including exceptional education students and students who have limited English proficiency.
  • Foster student responsibility, appropriate social behavior, integrity, valuing of cultural diversity, and respect for self and others by role modeling and learning activities. 
Collaboration
  • Facilitate collaboration among ELA teachers.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with other professionals, students, and parents.
  • Provide accurate and timely information to parents and students about academic and behavioral performance of students.
  • Collaborate with peers and other professionals to enhance student learning.
  • Collaborates with the IT Specialist to assist teachers with classroom technology needs
Staff Development
  • Engage in a continuing improvement of professional skills and knowledge.
  • Update the principal and teachers on the latest trends in the area of reading instruction.
  • Coach teachers in the latest techniques for the prevention and remediation of reading problems. 
  • Model effective teaching strategies and techniques to teachers at the school.
  • Assist teachers with the instructional strategies to improve DIBELS and LEAP assessment.
  • Conduct staff development activities to assist teachers in helping students improve reading skills. 
  • Participate in school data collection and monitoring
  • Attends Cluster and collaborates with the Instructional Leadership Team
  • Supervised by the Principal and Assistant Principal(s)
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (required); Master’s strongly preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience
  • Experience in presenting educational training programs with a demonstrated knowledge and practice of Language Arts or reading preferred
  • Valid Louisiana teacher certificate
  • Reading Certification/Literacy Specialist required

Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/ or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis. Incumbents may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict.
Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.
Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgment and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank task in order of importance; copy compare compile, compile and coordinate information and records. Understand how to manage stress.
