Alexandria Real Estate Equities is Hiring a Vice President - Head of Environmental, Health & Safety Near Boston, MA

This individual is responsible for developing and managing Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) programs to meet the Company’s strategic and tactical needs in the Greater Boston region. Principal responsibility is the development and execution of best-in-class programs and standards for the design, construction, and operation of research laboratory and cGMP manufacturing facility infrastructure. This individual will partner with multiple project managers to plan, design, and construct buildings that are code and regulatory compliant, as well as safe to operate and maintain. This individual will also partner with multiple facility managers to ensure that Alexandria buildings are operated safely and in compliance with said code and regulations. Further, this individual will interface with Alexandria tenants in the Greater Boston region to align tenant EH&S programs with those of Alexandria and in accordance with lease requirements. This individual will represent the Company in activities such as city/town permitting hearings and shall engage and support members of Alexandria’s Leasing team in lease negotiations. This individual shall collaborate with other teams to complement the Company’s sustainability program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all development/capital projects in the Company’s Greater Boston region and serve as the subject matter expert pertaining to chemical storage management strategies (i.e., in control areas, lab suites, etc.). This position shall guide external consultants on the most appropriate chemical management strategy for incorporation in building designs.
  • In partnership with Facility Management and Project Management, ensure that appropriate Fire Department requirements (signage, clear pathways to storage rooms, etc.) are developed and in place prior to applying for and obtaining Flammable Chemical licenses for all buildings.
  • In partnership with Facility Management and in collaboration with and support of tenants, ensure that all aspects of occupational readiness for incoming tenants are understood and in place, resulting in tenants’ readiness for Fire Department permit issuance.
  • In partnership with Facility Management, develop and administer a program to periodically review tenants’ chemical quantities to ensure adherence to permitted quantities.
  • Participate in all development/capital projects to ensure that contractors are incorporating appropriate safety programs within their construction projects, focusing on hot work, eye wash, first aid supplies, fall protection, appropriate levels of oversight, etc.
  • Establish, administer, and update specific EH&S programs, including records management, for compliance with state and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and other regulations, as necessary.
    Manage and execute initial Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) emissions and permitting submissions and ensure ongoing compliance through periodic monitoring of records.
  • Develop a safety training program tailored to the focus and specific risks within our business, and administer training at appropriate intervals.
  • Assist management team in emergency response, and function as EH&S Emergency Coordinator for 24-hour incident response.
  • Serve as Safety Head for Greater Boston.
  • Engage with state and municipal regulatory agencies, as necessary.
  • If necessary, develop policies, practices, and procedures (SOPs, safety procedures, and biosafety protocols).
  • Support due diligence associated with the Company’s M&A activity and real estate transactional management in the Greater Boston region.
  • Provide strategic and proactive direction on initiatives that will improve the company’s EH&S performance while minimizing risks and exposures.
  • Manage and direct EH&S consultants and external vendors supporting services across the Company’s Greater Boston region.
  • Stay informed of current and new regulatory requirements and other guidelines considered for implementation. Communicate significant regulatory and technical information to appropriate personnel with the Company.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) or equivalent in Engineering, EH&S, or related discipline required.
  • 7 years relevant experience in design, construction, and operation of life science buildings.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Expert-level knowledge and application of environmental health and safety regulations and familiarity with EH&S regulatory agencies’ protocols (OSHA, EPA, DOT, MassDEP, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), etc.).
  • Industrial hygiene skills and ergonomic program experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in an industrial or manufacturing work environment.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear/listen and to work (type) at a computer.
  • Specific vision abilities required to perform duties of the job include ability to adjust focus, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and color vision.
  • Mobility required to perform duties of the job also include ability to occasionally stand and walk; reach with arms and hands; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects.
