Alcuin School is Hiring a High School Biology Teacher Near Dallas, TX

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The Upper School Biology Teacher implements and delivers International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum based on the Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP) philosophy and helps direct students’ activities to reach his or her fullest potential in the specified academic areas as well as the community as a whole.

JOB SCOPE

The Upper School Biology Teacher adheres to the guidelines of the MYP and IB and his or her department about choosing and implementing curricula at appropriate levels for program and student development. Within the overarching structure of these guidelines, the teacher retains autonomy in the classroom in terms of how the syllabi and lessons are designed, implemented, and evaluated. Biologist responsibilities include researching, identifying, classifying, and studying plants, animals, and ecosystems. Biologists study organisms and plant life to learn more about their composition, behaviors, habitats, and how they interact with other organisms and their environment. They conduct research, collect samples and measurements, perform tests and experiments, and interpret and report their findings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implements all curricula within the designated subject area(s) following IB guidelines
  • Develops and follows a year at a glance that includes all IB connections and components
  • Develops the curriculum and syllabus for each academic year based on current IB and/or other accreditation standards and other educational requirements
  • Keeps records of all parent communications and shares them with Upper School Head as requested and/or as necessary
  • Maintains updated records of each student’s progress on a timely basis
  • Maintains the designated classroom
  • Facilitates a student advisory group through one-on-one meetings, small- and large-group meetings with other teachers, and team building activities as required
  • Prepares and submits required reports, including conference reports, lesson plans, and ongoing unit plans and modifications
  • Posts all Upper School grades and assignments only in ManageBac in a timely manner as specified in the Upper School Grading Policy
  • Plans, prepares, and conducts conferences with parents as one of the team
  • Communicates with parents about the progress of their child. This includes writing comments for conference reports, and email/phone communications regarding student challenges or successes in and out of the classroom
  • Works cooperatively with other members of the Upper School faculty in the planning and execution of interdisciplinary projects, community events, and other Upper School activities
  • Attends parent education events and community functions as detailed in the Staff Handbook
  • Attends department meeting, IB DP/MYP meetings, all-staff meetings, and school functions as outlined in the Employee Handbook, employment contract or as required
  • Leads or co-leads an advisory of Upper School students and facilitates student-led conferences with families
  • Completes other tasks as assigned by the Head of School or Director of Upper School or designate

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in ordering, maintaining, and sharing classroom inventories of science equipment and supplies
  • Sponsors or assists in a student-led club or organization or other IB required programs, such as CAS, as required
  • Writes letters of recommendation for students as required
  • Attends IB professional development as scheduled by the International Baccalaureate Coordinator
  • Completes NOLS training as required
  • Acts as chaperon on domestic and international trips as required
  • Completes state-mandated bus driver training and drives an Alcuin bus on field trips when required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass Criminal Background Checks, Drug Testing, and Reference Check
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field
  • Teaching experience
  • Ability to interact and communicate appropriately and professionally in both written and verbal format with parents, students, and colleagues
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft and Google Suite of products
  • Must demonstrate and enthusiastically support the School’s Mission

Preferred:

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree
  • IB Diploma Programme teaching experience
  • Working knowledge of ManageBac, Blackbaud, Naviance and Parchment platforms
  • Fluency with Vernier or Pasco laboratory equipment
  • Differentiated instruction; helps each student learn effectively by tailoring their lessons to each student’s unique needs
  • Brings science lessons to life with real-world applications

EQUIPMENT USED

  • Computers, laptops, tablets, phones, printers, copiers, fax
  • Audio/Visual technology – whiteboards, projectors, TVs/screens, and microphones
  • Laboratory equipment (centrifuges, water bath, hot plates, scales…) and light microscopes

JOB CONDITIONS

  • Completes DP training before or within the first year of employment in the role, as required
  • Prepares for and teach classes daily
  • Assesses student work for grades daily and/or weekly
  • Attends staff and faculty meetings monthly
  • Attends departmental meetings monthly or as scheduled
  • Submits grades and grade reports quarterly
  • Works in standard classroom climate and conditions
  • Works outdoors supervising students at carpool and on school trips

PAY RANGE

Pay is based on experience and is competitive with Independent Schools in the Dallas, Texas, area.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
