Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail is Hiring a CORRECTIONS SHIFT LIEUTENANT Near Charlottesville, VA

ALBEMARLE – CHARLOTTESVILLE REGIONAL JAIL


This position is employed by the Albemarle‐Charlottesville Regional Jail

Under the supervision of the Captain of Security, the Shift Lieutenant assist in supervising the
daily jail operations while ensuring the safety and security of inmates, staff and the citizens of
the Charlottesville community. The Shift Lieutenant uses the proper enforcement of jail policies
and procedures as well as supervises the work of the shifts’ subordinates. Essential functions
include, but are not limited to, the following:

Supervises the booking and releasing of inmates; reviews inmates’ criminal records to
ensure appropriate classification, security and treatment; reviews projected release
dates

 Supervises subordinate officers through the chain of command; supervisory duties
include scheduling, instructing, planning and assigning work, reviewing work,
maintaining standards, coordinating activities, acting on employee problems, and
recommending employee discipline and discharge.

 Schedules and participates in officer training.

Assumes responsibility for jail operations as necessary in the absence of the Jail
Superintendent; Deputy Superintendent, Major and the Captain of Security.

Supervises meals, visitation, recreation and exercise, educational activities, telephone

privileges, counseling, court visits, movement within the facility, and medical attention;

conducts head counts regularly.

 Investigates or assists in investigating and resolving inmate complaints.

 Assists in coordinating inmate activity with court personnel, law enforcement agencies,

probation officers and other as necessary.

 Remains on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week, for emergency response

 Evaluates and ensures that basic needs of inmates are met, including the availability of medical

attention, hygiene supplies, clothing, and nutritional meals, ensures proper handling of inmate

money and property.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Must possess a valid state driver’s license

Must possess DCJS basic correctional officer certification

CPR/First Aid certifications are desirable.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL:

Associate’s degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to
satisfactory completion of two years of college education with emphasis in criminal justice, law
enforcement, corrections, social science or social service, or a closely related field is preferred
but not required; Bachelor’s degree is desirable, but not required. Eight of years of experience
in a Criminal Justice field will substitute educational requirements.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:
Must successfully complete the Albemarle‐Charlottesville Regional Jail Department physical;
must be able to operate a motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions; must be able
to physically subdue and restrain an individual. This position requires extensive walking and
standing with occasional running and frequent heavy lifting. Requires working in adverse
weather. Must be able to work all shifts, including nights, under stressful and sometimes life
threatening conditions. Must carry a firearm (transportation) and qualify at least annually with
approved weapons.
