Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail is Hiring a PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER Near Charlottesville, VA

ALBEMARLE –CHARLOTTESVILLE REGIONAL JAIL
This position is employed by the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail
This position is not employed by Albemarle County Public Schools & Local Government
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner willprovide mental health services to the
inmate population of the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail (ACRJ) and to perform related
professional work as required. This class requires a highly organized and responsible individual
capable of operating in a structured manner while possessing the ability to respond to sudden
changes. This class requires excellent time management skills. This class works within Board
policy and organizational guidelines and plans and implements related services and activities.
This class operates within the Behavioral Health Services Department. Administrative
supervision will be conducted by the Deputy Superintendent. Clinical supervision will be
conducted by the Director of Psychiatric Services under a collaborative agreement, as needed
and the Mental Health/ SA Clinical Consultant.

. Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

The position operates within a general outline of duties which develops work methods and
sequences under the general supervision of Director of Psychiatric Services, as needed. All
duties will be performed in compliance with applicable laws, policies, procedures/protocols and
standards of care. Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Triages requests and referrals for Mental Health/Substance Abuse staff

Conducts assessments, evaluations, and diagnoses Psychiatric Mental Health/Substance Abuse
conditions, develops treatment plans, and applies appropriate therapies and/or makes
appropriate referrals

Conducts risk assessments for patients who are placed on Suicide/Close watch

Reviews, prescribes, and manages the administration of Psychiatric medications.

Conducts assessments, evaluates inmates, and prepares necessary transfer paperwork for
inmates in need of psychiatric hospitalizations to appropriate state psychiatric facilities

Maintains confidential and accurate electronic medical records in compliance with all applicable
laws, policies, and standards. Ensures documentation is current and entered in a timely manner

Provides on Call emergency psychiatric services after-hours and/or holidays, as arranged

Serves as liaison to patients’ family members, physicians, outside agencies and others as
appropriate

Works collaboratively with the Medical Health Services Department, the Behavioral Health
Services Department, Security staff, Inmate Services staff, and community service providers such
as but not limited to; Region Ten, OAR, Probation and Parole, local courts, commonwealth
attorneys and defense attorneys.

Educates inmates on the various components of care they receive and tracks progress
Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides primary care, programming,
and other services to inmates

Assists with compilation data for various reports as required by the organization, County, City,
and/or other agencies

Reviews and makes recommendations for policies, procedures and/or protocols as appropriate
to ensure quality care, efficiency, compliance with regulations and standards, safety, and security

Completes annual staff training as required for suicide prevention and other areas as assigned
according to the Training Department Staff.

Performs general administrative/clerical work as necessary, including entering and retrieving
computer data, copying, and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending, and receiving
faxes, attending meetings, ordering supplies, etc.; and

REQUIREMENTS:
Requires a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Licensure
Must become aware of the policies and procedures of the National Commission on Correctional
Health Care, NCCHC, and plan to become certified within a two-year period for Mental Health.
Requires 0ne year of experience in correctional nursing. One year experience as
Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner; Autonomous PMHNP preferred.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURES:
Must possess valid Virginia Registered Nurse, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and
Prescriptive Authority licensure through the State Board of Nursing

Must possess/or be able to apply for Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license
Must possess CPR/AED certifications
Must possess a valid state driver’s license
