The Institutional Environmental Health Consultant position works closely with two other staff to provide safety and occupational health consultative services to multiple tribal health organizations across Alaska. We are particularly interested in qualified candidates who have experience in preparing healthcare facilities for Joint Commission Environment of Care and Life Safety surveys.
Summary:
Under limited supervision, provides environmental health consultation for staff and tribal healthcare organizations in one or more of the fields of radiation physics, industrial hygiene, healthcare accreditation, occupational health and safety, environmental protection, compliance, infection control or related fields.
Responsibilities:
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Provides institutional environmental health support for staff and tribal customers. Provides the following services or with supervision acquires competencies to provide these services:
· Provides radiological health surveys for medical and dental x-ray units to evaluate patient radiation doses and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
· Identifies researches and recommends solutions to problems with radiation equipment.
· Prepares tribal healthcare organizations for accreditation surveys; reviews and provides advice to tribal facilities; trains professional staff on service compliance.
· Evaluates healthcare environments for chemical, biological and physical hazards.
· Provides guidance on regulatory and compliance issues.
· Assists tribal organizations with written program reviews and interpretation of survey findings.
· Conducts design reviews. Coordinates laboratory analysis and reporting.
· Provides risk assessment.
· Inspects facilities for lead and asbestos.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
· Knowledge of environmental health statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances, codes, administrative orders and other operational guidelines and directives.
· Knowledge of environmental health program resources, protocols and procedures.
· Knowledge of presentation and public speaking skills.
· Skill in creating comprehensive technical reports.
· Skill in interpreting technical matters for diverse audiences.
· Skill in making recommendations based on evaluation and assisting facilities in implementing recommendations.
· Skill in operating a variety of technical equipment related to industrial hygiene, environmental and occupational safety, and compliance testing.
· Skill in evaluating and interpreting environmental health regulations.
· Skill in analyzing environmental health issues and preparing recommendations based on findings.
· Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, and representatives from regional tribal organizations and other state and federal agencies.
· Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A Master’s degree in public health or related field. Progressively responsible professional/exempt work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Non-supervisory – Five (5) years of environmental health experience. One of the following certifications may be substituted for two years of experience: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or completion of the IHS Institutional Residency Program.
