Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has a hiring preference for qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.

Summary: Under general plans, designs and constructs water treatment and supply, wastewater treatment and collection, solid waste systems, and rural health clinics for Native villages throughout the state of Alaska. Responsibilities:

Incumbent will assist project engineer in all aspects related to development and completion of engineering projects and provision of sanitation or health care facilities. Incumbent will be under the general supervision of a project engineer yet will be responsible for completion of assignments both independently and in coordination with project team members. Independent judgment and initiative will be applied in carrying out duties

C onducts research on historical designs, costs, and construction projects and reports findings. Prepares preliminary engineering designs utilizing both standard drafting techniques and computer aided design software. Conducts engineering analyses of structural, hydraulic, and mechanical systems utilizing fundamental engineering concepts and engineering software as provided. Orders, materials, equipment, tools, etc. required for proposed construction. Acts as inspector on projects or contract work on construction projects at the direction of the project engineer to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and technical requirements.

P repares or assists in the preparation of O&M plans for implementation by communities at the end of project completion. Serves as the project engineer’s representative and works with other engineering staff toward completion of assigned tasks. Assists in conducting land surveys, including laying out and staking of proposed facilities. Assists in maintaining design, construction, and financial records for ongoing and completed projects. Visits Native communities as the representative of the ANTHC project engineer to carry out project duties. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

  • Knowledge of math (including calculus), natural sciences (including chemistry, physics, etc.), and applied sciences (mechanics, dynamics, etc.).
  • Knowledge of drafting techniques (knowledge of computer aided drafting is desired).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft word processing and spreadsheet computer software or equal applications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

  • Must be enrolled full-time in an accredited engineering program and must have junior, senior, or graduate standing as defined by the respective school.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale for undergraduates.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale for graduates.
  • Civil and environmental engineering students are desired but other disciplines will be considered.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Periodic travel to rural communities is required via jet and single engine aircraft.
  • Travel on all-terrain-vehicle or small boat may also be necessary to carry out assigned tasks.
  • Incumbent may work within close proximity to sewage disposal facilities and may be exposed to risk factors associated with raw sewage.
  • Visits to project sites may require working in close proximity to heavy construction equipment.
  • Safety precautions such as hepatitis immunization and ANTHC, DEHE project safety guidelines are available to minimize risk associated with job site conditions.
