JOB DESCRIPTION:
DETENTION OFFICER
Department:
Detention Center Job Status: Hourly
FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt Reports To: Sergeant
Grade/Level: 66 Amount of Travel Required: <15%

Location: Detention Center, Graham, NC 
 
JOB PURPOSE:  Under general supervision, performs a variety of law enforcement duties in the care, custody and security of all prisoners in the Alamance County Detention Center. Position is primarily responsible for prevention and detection of crime and the general enforcement of criminal laws of North Carolina. Performs general jail and detention work. Employee is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of all personnel, inmates and jail. Employee must be able to exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in frequent contact with the public. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement style work. Within this role the work done is under the general supervision of the Sheriff and delegated staff members and is reviewed through daily written reports, conferences and the general effectiveness of security and policy enforcement throughout the detention center.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Maintains the safety and security of all personnel, inmates and detention center.
  • Works booking area of the detention center by booking inmates in and out, performing searches of inmates and securing all personal property.
  • Prepares files for incoming inmates, actively works in inmate files as needed including performing tasks like completing medical history, securing and documenting personal belongings including money and all items properly.
  • Prepares release orders from court system and maintains court records.
  • Answers phone calls, provides information to mail bondsmen, families, attorneys, court officials and other law enforcement personnel.
  • Maintains and provides proper security and safety of inmates by observing and patrolling throughout shifts.
  • Transporting prisoners throughout the building, to and from the Magistrate, to the Nurse and other areas within the facility, and to and from other detention and jail centers.
  • Conducts searches within cells, provides supplies to cell blocks, and provides supervision of 2-48 prisoners at a time.
  • Provides supervision for the Trustees and directs work assignments.
  • Runs visitation when assigned.
  • Preforms any other related work as directed and needed.

 Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D. required. Associate's Degree or further education preferred.
Experience: One to two years of experience in security or detention center work preferred; employees must be at least 21 years of age.
Computer Skills: Must have a basic to intermediate functional knowledge of computers. 
License/Credentials/Requirement: Possession of a valid NC driver's license. Possession of Basic Detention Officer Certification from the NC Sheriff's Education and Training Standards Commission, preferred or obtained within one year of employment.
