Alabama STEM Council is Hiring an Executive Director Near Birmingham, AL

Alabama STEM Council at the Alabama Workforce Training Center (AWTC) located in Central Alabama is seeking a full-time Executive Director ($117,200 - $159,500).

SYNOPSIS

The Executive Director of the Alabama STEM Council Operations Center supports the efforts of the STEM Council to implement Alabama’s STEM Roadmap and the responsibilities outlined in Executive Order 721, establishing the Alabama STEM Council. The Director will work closely with the STEM Council Executive Committee and Council Chair, in coordination with the Deputy Secretary of Commerce/AIDT Executive Director. Competitive salary based on experience. Residency in the state of Alabama required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all organizational facets of the Alabama STEM Council – Operations Team, Executive Committee, Council Members, all working groups and committees, and all contracting service providers to ensure effective function.
  • Lead the identification or design, implementation, and the assessment of programs that promote student interest, engagement, and college and career exploration in STEM disciplines and careers.
  • Develop legislative proposals, programmatic initiatives, and related budgets to improve STEM education and workforce training in Alabama in close collaboration with the Governor’s office, the Legislature, and workforce development leadership.
  • Gather information on the progress of existing STEM programs and initiatives to regularly update the STEM Council, policymakers, and other stakeholder groups.
  • Produce an annual budget and transparently track expenses associated with STEM Council initiatives and staffing.
  • Hire necessary staff and ensure appropriate orientation and mentoring of staff to success in their areas of responsibility.
  • Bi-annually conduct performance reviews of all staff using AIDT-compliant protocol.
  • Establish an external foundation that seeks corporate, philanthropic, private sector financial donations to support Alabama STEM initiatives.
  • Build collaborative relationships with local and statewide organizations whose missions intersect with that of the STEM Council. This includes a commitment to travel.
  • Create and regularly update the operating procedures, bylaws, and norms of engagement with, and between, the STEM Council Executive Committee and full Council membership.
  • Function as the key public figure and point of contact for interfacing with other local, state, and national STEM leaders and initiatives.
  • Implement and oversee a robust communication function of the STEM Council including speaking, writing, and representing the Council at public events and overseeing the proofing and vetting of communications emanating from the Council.
  • Lead strategic planning to set a course for the future direction of the Council through continuous intake from key stakeholders including staff, Council, external partners, and those served.
  • Ensure the successful implementation of Alabama’s regional STEM Ecosystems, leading to greater collaboration, increased external (non-ETF) funding, higher learner participation rates and greater STEM workforce development within each ecosystem.

Required Competencies:

  • Accomplished leader in STEM education.
  • Expertise successfully fostering a climate of success by students and other stakeholders traditionally underrepresented in STEM.
  • Proven project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with stakeholders from diverse STEM-based disciplines and experiences.
  • Capacity to identify, develop and champion new methods, products, or procedures in response to emerging STEM industry and educational trends.
  • Successful team building and personnel management including setting goals, tracking progress against the goals, ensuring feedback and addressing performance issues effectively.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written and nonverbal communication skills.
  • Experience in budget development, management, and financial oversight.
  • Experience developing local, state, or national policy.
  • Experience leading effective teamwork in virtual environments.
  • Strategic planning and evidence-based decision making.
  • Ability to diagnose organizational strengths and weaknesses, prescribing solutions when appropriate.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum six years’ combined management/supervisory experience in appropriate area of specialization. Baccalaureate Degree from a duly accredited institution required in appropriate area of specialization. Advanced degree preferred.

Salary and General:

Initial placement will be based on experience and education within a range of $117,200 $159,500. Paid monthly. Excellent benefits package included.

Criminal Background Check:

The applicant chosen for employment will be required to sign a Criminal Background Check consent form. The cost of the criminal background check will be paid by the STEM Council. Permanent employment will be contingent upon the results of the criminal background check.
