ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - SECONDARY JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Assistant Principal - Secondary

SUPERVISES: Staff members as directed.

JOB GOAL:

1. To relieve the principal of such impediments that prevent him from fulfilling his chief responsibility of promoting the educational well-being of each student.

2. To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills in promoting the educational development of each student.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess Alabama Certification Rank I.
  • Proper endorsement in School Administration and Supervision.
  • Three years successful teaching experience.
  • Knowledgeable of secondary curriculum areas served.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist principal in establishing and maintaining an effective learning climate in the school.
  • As directed, assist in planning and organizing the implementation of all school activities.
  • Assist, as directed, with the maintenance of all required building records and reports.
  • As directed by the principal, prepare or supervise the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork.
  • As directed by the principal, provide effective leadership for the school’s curriculum and instructional program.
  • Interpret and enforce all district policies and administrative regulations.
  • Maintain active relationship with students and parents.
  • Budget school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business.
  • Assist as directed in scheduling classes within established district guidelines in order to meet student needs.
  • Assist, as directed by the principal, in the development, revisions, and evaluation of the curriculum.
  • Establish and maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, according to due process as to the rights of students/parents.
  • Assist, as directed by the principal, in establishing guidelines for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline. Publish, disseminate student handbook, and orients students accordingly.
  • Attend special events held to recognize student achievement, and attend school sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.
  • Supervise, as directed by the principal, the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.
  • Assume responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organizations, through attendance at regional, state, and national meetings, through enrollment in advanced courses, and the like.
  • As directed by the principal, supervise, observe and evaluate all classified and certified personnel attached to the school in accordance with existing Board policy on certified and classified personnel.
  • As directed by the principal, orient newly assigned staff members and assist in their development.
  • In the absence of the principal, conduct meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school and to keep members informed of policy changes, new programs, and the like.
  • Assist in the inservice orientation and training of teachers.
  • Make arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers.
  • Assume responsibility, as directed by the principal, for the safety and administration of the school plan.
  • Supervise the daily use of the school facilities for nonacademic purposes.
  • Plan and supervise fire drills and emergency preparedness program.
  • Provide, as directed by the principal, for all fixed asset inventories under school jurisdiction and for the security and accountability for that property.
  • Supervise and evaluate, as directed by the principal, the school’s extracurricular programs that are outgrowths of the school’s curriculum.
  • In the absence of the principal, participate in administrative meetings and other meetings as are required or appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicity support for overall school objectives and programs; to interpret Board policies and administrative directives; and to discuss and resolve individual student problems.
  • Serve as a member of such committees and attend such meetings as directed by the principal or Superintendent.
  • Assume responsibility for coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
  • Assume responsibility as directed for all textbook matters.
  • Assume responsibility as directed for fundraising activities.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade levels assigned.
  • Good knowledge of school’s program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to move around the room in order to monitor student work and behavior.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with students, parents and peers.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of contract and salary to be established by the Board.


EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Administrators.
