RETAIL OPERATIONS MANAGER

OVERVIEW

The US Space & Rocket Center is seeking a self-motivated Retail Sales Manager, with experience managing diverse teams and multiple retail outposts on one property. A self-starter, able to make and execute plans that optimize sales volume and reduce expenses. The Retail Sales Manager must be able to manage multiple competing priorities and balance priorities while keeping the team moving forward. The Retail Sales Manager reports directly to the Senior Director, Museum Operations, and is responsible for all aspects of leading daily operations for retail outposts on-site at the Rocket Center including personnel management, merchandising, inventory movement, customer service, and optimizing sales.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Retail Sales – Gift Shops

  • Retail Management of multiple locations.
  • Manage daily operations of multiple onsite locations.
    • Personnel management, including hiring, training, coaching, and discipline.
    • Scheduling – partnering with the planning department, making sure the shops are successfully staffed.
    • Merchandising – creative, effective use of displays to drive sales.
    • Inventory flow – moving inventory throughout locations to drive sales.
    • Customer service – ensure every guest is pleased and wishes to return and recommend.
  • Drive and track sales in each location to exceed budget/plan, reporting to superiors.
  • Manage retail events such as book signings, astronaut visits, and others, as needed in conjunction with the Senior Director of Museum Operations.
  • Partner with various team members to develop new initiatives from concept to execution.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, peers, and leadership on operations and customer issues and opportunities.

eCommerce Administration

  • Serve as the primary business owner for the eCommerce site.
  • Work cross-functionally with the webmaster, retail operations, warehouse, buying, marketing, and others to maintain and update the site regularly.
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Museum Operations on a strategy for the eCommerce site.
  • Monitor and suggest best practices for moving forward to drive sales and make shopping easier.
  • Develop a calendar for eCommerce updates and work collaboratively to ensure all items are updated, photos are shot and new categories with corresponding graphics are launched on time.
  • Develop a marketing plan for the eCommerce site within budget constraints and using best practices for driving growth to existing and new customers with the Senior Director of Museum Operations.
  • Ensure photography and banner ads are produced/executed and on time per the marketing plan.
  • Exceed sales budget/goals.

Camp Merchandise Delivery – On-Line Order Fulfillment

  • Work collaboratively with VP, Camp Operations, and other departments to oversee revenue programs to support Rocket Center growth.

Inventory Management

  • Manage the flow of inventory to multiple retail outposts to optimize assortment and sell-through on campus based on consumer demand and traffic.
  • Ensure accurate annual accounting of inventory to report to State auditors.
  • Minimize shrinkage.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Level of Supervision: Manager - of personnel and processes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required/Preferred Education

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent job experience required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or a closely related field is preferred.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in retail operations, and customer experience/customer service required.
  • Must have planned, directed, and managed people and operations for high-volume retailers.
  • Excellent ability to analyze processes and work with cross-functional teams to ensure desired results are reached.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Experience managing multi-unit operations is preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting for periods (4-6 hours) conducting business over the telephone and operating a computer terminal.
  • Walking, climbing (stairs) to access other departments.
  • Carrying, and lifting items weighing up to 30 pounds to waist height.
  • Sight, reading, wrist movements, and feeling to operate computer terminal, handle documents, and create reports.
  • Talking, listening, and instructing employees and assisting guests and service providers in person and over the telephone.

Eligibility Qualifications

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Environmental Factors

  • This job is in an air-conditioned shop and office. Travel to and from the warehouse in all weather conditions may occur.

Expected Hours of Work

The Gift Shops of the US Space & Rocket Center are open when the Center is open, from 9 to 5 every day of the year except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Workdays typically start as early as 8 a.m. and typically last until 6 p.m. Therefore, 7-day-a-week availability is required.
