Position Summary

JOB SUMMARY :

The International Program Specialist will function as Project Coordinator of externally funded programs, help with marketing and recruitment of international students, including web page and social media;

manage language labs for Alabama Language Institute; and administer ESL Placement tests and TOEFL.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES :

  • Assists with placement testing and registration for new students in the Alabama Language Institute
  • Provide orientation to new international students.
  • Serves as the lab coordinator in the Alabama Language Institute
  • Coordinates ALI graduation each semester
  • Works with ALI instructors and community entities to provide activities for international students, such as welcome dinners, holiday parties, field trips, and conversation programs.
  • Assists with on-site institutional TOEFL administration.
  • Serves as the sponsor of the campus student organization Students without Borders
  • Works collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff, and community members to organize and promote activities that highlight international students on campus and in the community.
  • Support international students with housing needs, transportation from the Birmingham airport upon arrival, transition into the College and the community;

drives a college van as needed.

  • Assists with online websites and social media platforms for promoting international students at GSCC and for marketing and recruitment purposes.
  • Communicates effectively and positively with prospective and current students via email, phone, and face to face encounters, and directs them to the DSO in Admissions & Records to begin the application process.
  • Complies with all policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Two (2) years of postsecondary education required . Associate's degree preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Two years of experience in office or related work preferred.
  • Experience working with international students preferred.
  • Friendly personality; enthusiastic, positive attitude; evidence of trustworthiness and ethical conduct; effective human relations skills;

strong work ethic, cultural sensitivity.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

  • Ability to keyboard at a minimum of 40 correct (net) words a minute for 3 minutes.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and proofreading (Office Procedures Level II Exam).
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software (Computer Level II Exam).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routines and policies and procedures of the college.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective contacts with students, other employees, and the public.
  • Flexibility to perform duties occasionally outside of normal business hours.
  • Knowledge of social media and website maintenance

Salary Schedule E-3, Grade 04 - $38,979 - $56,128, based on previous full-time and related experience, as submitted by the candidate in the application packet, subject to verification upon hire.

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions.

    Tuition Assistance

    This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy.
