Description

The American Library Association (ALA) is the foremost national association for libraries and information centers in the world, delivering pragmatic solutions to pressing issues such as expanding economic opportunity, advancing education, and learning in the global economy, and strengthening public interest information policies such as telecommunications, copyright, access to government information, funding, privacy, and free speech. The ACRL division helps those working in academic and research libraries learn, innovate, and lead within the academic community.

The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) seeks a Program Manager for Consulting and Professional Development to lead and develop two key initiatives:

  • ACRL Consulting Services: Manages program to assist academic libraries with expert reviews, planning, and strategic development.
  • ACRL RoadShow Program: Coordinates facilitators and manages in-person and virtual professional development directly to libraries or consortium at an affordable cost.

Key Responsibilities Include:

ACRL Consulting Services designs and assists with academic library reviews and planning activities, organizational change and development initiatives, staff retreats, and campus collaborations. This position will manage our team of experienced adjunct consultants, manage the operations, and expand the program through strategic marketing and outreach.

  • Fields requests from prospective clients, performing intake calls.
  • Identifies and completes outreach to potential new clients.
  • Negotiates between clients and adjunct consultants to determine scope of service.
  • Develops written proposals for providing requested services.
  • Contracts with clients and issues agreements with consultants.
  • Develops, maintains, improves, and deploys consulting procedures and processes by using ACRL’s Standards for Libraries in Higher Education as a framework.
  • Assesses and reports outs impact of ACRL’s consulting program.
  • Develops, monitors, and controls consulting budget.
  • Builds and manages a team of expert adjunct consultants through recruitment, development, evaluation, and performance feedback.
  • Designs and implements promotional copy and marketing campaigns, including niche audiences.
  • Initiates requests for consultant payment and client billing.
  • Mediates between clients and consultants as needed.
  • Provides direct consulting services such as external reviews, recommendations on conducting leadership searches, meeting facilitation, staff retreats, and strategic planning, and conveys findings and recommendations in written reports based on consulting services provided (preferred).

ACRL's traveling workshop “RoadShow” program allows academic and research libraries to bring high quality professional development directly to their campus, chapter, or consortium at an affordable cost. Day-long traveling workshops and online experiences have been designed to help academic library professionals tackle the greatest issues facing the profession today. This position will independently manage all aspects of and seek to expand ACRL’s licensed workshop program.

  • Fields requests from prospective workshop hosts.
  • Strategizes, develops, and executes marketing campaigns for program expansion.
  • Develops, monitors, and controls the licensed workshop budget.
  • Stays abreast of current trends and topics within academic libraries to strategize and coordinate development of new workshops and opportunities with member input, e.g. presenter toolkits, public curriculum repositories, workshop surveys, new workshop models.
  • Develops and oversees processes and procedures for workshop oversight with member input, e.g. cyclical curriculum review, presenter selection/review, coordinator selection, etc.
  • Manages recruitment and selection of new workshop presenters and presenter coordinators, in conjunction with member oversight groups, and provides onboarding and developmental support.
  • Serves as a resource and liaison to member oversight groups, presenter teams, and host institutions.
  • Coaches’ novice hosts on how to organize logistics and registration for a successful event.
  • Mediates between hosts and presenters as needed.
  • Expands and revises ACRL procedures and policies for selecting presenter coordinators for each workshop, with member input.
  • Develops means to share curriculum resources widely online, ensures materials are deposited regularly and remain updated, and promotes materials as a resource to broader community.

This is a regular full-time position based in our Chicago office.

ALA staff are currently working on a hybrid schedule. Please note that although we have a generous telecommuting policy for our employees, we do not have any truly remote positions in states outside of our workplace sites. 

ALA currently requires that employees be fully vaccinated as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Proof of vaccination will be required on or before start date. 

All offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check and proof of your eligibility to work in the United States.

Starting salary range negotiable from low-60s, based on relevant experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes flexible work schedules, medical, dental, generous paid vacation, a retirement annuity, and a 35-hour work week. You may also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).

Required Education and Experience:

  • A master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS) – OR – minimum of 2 years work experience in academia, nonprofits, or curriculum design along with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, business, philosophy, education, English, or similar pertinent field of study/experience.
  • Project management and presentation skills are of paramount importance. Ability to successfully handle multiple projects at the same time.
  • Flexibility in adapting to changing (or unexpected shifts) in workflow.
  • Excellent organizational ability and works independently to accomplish goals.
  • Sophisticated oral and written communication skills and attention to detail to write compelling customized letters addressed to executives and academics, conduct intake interviews with prospective clients to assess need, and manage all follow-up with clients.
  • Judgment, discretion, negotiation, and problem-solving skills are required on both the interpersonal and technological level. Must be able to solve problems relating to procedures and processes and be able to negotiate changes in contracts and logistics.
  • Experience in academic libraries and/or awareness of contemporary issues in higher education preferred, with emphasis on training or teaching academic librarians.
  • Fluency with MS Office.
  • Experience with online content management system, such as html editing and Drupal.
