Job Title: Principle Flight Mechanics Engineer IV

  1. Summary of Position:

The engineer in this position will be responsible for tasks associated with aircraft handling qualities, modeling, and simulation. This engineer will be responsible for leading and developing rotorcraft flight simulation activities in the US. Activities include the development and validation of new rotorcraft models and simulation methodologies, leading the analysis of aircraft aeromechanics and flight dynamics using appropriate tools, and ensuring continued growth of simulation lab capabilities.

As a member of the larger LHD Aircraft System Integration organization, the engineer will work closely with colleagues and participate in projects that span multiple disciplines and/or geographies to achieve successful outcomes.

Specific to AW609, this engineer will support aircraft Handling Qualities FAA certification activities including test plan execution and reporting. The engineer will be responsible for leading analysis of aircraft aeromechanics and flight dynamics utilizing complex analytical models and tools such as flight simulation.

Applies appropriate practices and principles to develop and ensure accuracy of simulation and analytical models for design and certification. Develop analytical tools and processes to efficiently achieve program technical objectives.

Lead analytical studies to ensure Flight Mechanics tasks and products are completed in a manner that satisfies program objectives and delivers high-quality deliverables. Coordinate these activities with the appropriate team leaders and engineers across LHD Engineering disciplines in the US, Italy and UK.

Lead aircraft handling qualities FAA certification test activities to successful completion. Work with AW609 flight test department, DERs, pilots, and other engineers to execute certification plans. Ensure tests can be executed safely and efficiently while ensuring tools and processes are in place to analyze and report test results.

Manage engineering flight simulation lab. Develop and execute a lab technology roadmap to ensure capabilities are in place to support AW609 activities as well as new business initiatives and research and development activities. Develop cost and schedule plans for laboratory activities and coordinate with multiple-geographies to enhance commonality in tools and processes.

Develop, test and implement innovative control law design solutions that satisfy customer and certification requirements.

Provide oversight and input to on-going development of the aircraft systems, including flight control laws, flight test and Problem Report/squawk process, to ensure optimal design for business, customer, and certification objectives.

Support the development of new and innovative aircraft concepts and technologies that allow the company to compete in the future rotorcraft market including the areas of Urban Air Mobility and US/NATO Future Vertical Lift.

Mentor junior engineers on a range of subjects including analytical methods, handling qualities and interpretation of flight test data.

  1. Qualifications for Position

A. Education

  • BS Aerospace Engineering
  • Advanced degree preferred

B. Experience

  • 10 or more years as a handling qualities, aeromechanic or flight dynamics engineer.
  • 5 or more years performing simulation, design, and testing of rotorcraft and/or fly-by-wire flight control laws.
  • Experience with Tiltrotor modeling and handling qualities preferred. 
  • Experience with Flight Lab simulation software preferred.

  • Proven experience creating plans and/or processes, communicating, and executing them efficiently across a diverse and complex organization.
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills to effectively communicate to all levels of the organization. 
  • High-integrity and technical expertise as necessary to qualify as a DER candidate and/or represent the Engineering organization outside the company.
  • Practical experience with FAA certification processes preferred.
