Duties
  • Serves as the soils program lead to implement a comprehensive statewide soil resource management program across BLM Wyoming.
  • Formulates and recommends short-range programs for soils management and provides technical evaluation and support to the development of long-range plans.

Qualifications
This position has an individual occupational requirement. FOR GS-12: In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-011 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
  • Professional knowledge of principles, concepts, and practices of soil science including soil classification, soil mapping, soil correlation, soil interpretations, soil ecology, soil management principles, soil-plant and soil-water relationships, and ecological site classification sufficient to develop and execute a statewide soil resource management program.
  • Professional knowledge of standard methods for soil sampling and analysis techniques, including interpretations of lab and field measurements, necessary to make sound resource management interpretations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
Physical Demands: The work is performed in an office and in the field. Office work is primarily sedentary. Field work requires traversing over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces on foot, bending to collect samples, and exposure to extreme temperatures during onsite inspections, as well as the operation of hand and power tools to examine soils in the field and obtain soil samples. Field work also requires operating four-wheel drive vehicles and all-terrain vehicles on rough roads in remote areas.
Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office. Occasional travel may be required. The position may be required to visit field sites where risks may include exposure to inclement weather and potential injury from falls, strains, bites, stings, etc. The
incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or designated by the Safety & Occupational Health Specialist.
Education
This position has an individual occupational requirement. In order to qualify, you must meet one of the below:
  1. Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.

  2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
